Zorki 1, Grip and Softies?

Hi Will,
I don't think M grips would fit, if you compare a Barnak Leica and a Leica M, you'll find out that the height is very different. The grip would certainely prevent you from winding correctly, as it would be placed just in front of the winding knob. However, a soft release would normally fit as long as there is a thread on the release button.
have fun!

The early Zorkis are like Fed 1 or Leica Barnacks and only have an outer thread, this thread normally covered by a knurdled shirt surrounding the release.

The Leica chassis had a change in size between IIIb and IIIc (I think) and they have incompatibility with accessory problem, the Fed 1 and Zorki 1 are not too compatible with Leica IIs, the shutter release surround will swap (in early Zorkis), baseplates no, cassettes no, etc. A Zorki II cassette won't fit in a Zorki 1, early Feds have difficulty with commercial cassettes, a IIIc can have difficulty with commercial cassettes.

The M is a different beast entirely.

Compatibility is not good.

Sorry too abstract.

if you have a Zorki with a fed style release you can get an adopter, few dollars, to take a normal cable release, but they are a bit like the empire states building. The soft release would screw into this, empire states with martian flying saucer parked on top...

All of my Zorkis have a standard cable release. My Zorki.1d (see link in sig) has a mini-soft release that works great and gives it the right hight and feel [for me]. My Zorki.1c doesn't have one for the simple reason that it has an extremely light touch release... a "hair trigger" I call it. Otherwise, it would have a mini too.

My 1a (062xx) is different from a 1b, (the 1a has a Fed style release), the Fed/Zorkis must have been the same, - never seen one of these.

Oh sure. I know the very early Zorkis, which are getting harder to find, shared several characteristics with FEDs. My 1b (I think) has the FED style "pointy" RF cam, film take-up spool drum, and needs the FED style round pressure plate, which I haven't been able to find yet. 🙁 Someone not long ago posted a Bay.link to an early Zorki that had the FED/Barnack style shutter release you mention. My Leica.IIIs have spoiled me to this and I would much prefer it on a Zorki.

Thanks Noel,

Thanks Noel,

Been too spoiled by a cheap grip on the M, and would love to use one on a Zorki 1.

Been spoiled by soft-releases too, would want to shot without one...
