Zorki 4 take up spool

Hello all.

Does anyone have the definitive solution to replacing the take up spool from a Zorki4? (without buying a replacement from FSU).

OR,

Does anyone have a detailed drawing of an original one (with dimensions, preferably metric) so I can wip one up on a lathe?

OR,

Does the one on the Rick Oleson site work on a Zorki 4?

First (and it's a bit of a cop-out!) I originally used the inner spool from an old 35mm film and stuck the tongue to it with insulation tape!

Mine has film in at the moment but if nobody else comes forward I'll make a manufacturing drawing of mine when it's free (I'm an engineer). You will need to fab a hole at the top with a recessed key across its diameter though! (My one looks cast).

I've got a couple here (older all metal and later plastic/bakelite? type) that I could measure up for you and take a couple of pics so you can see the clip that holds the film. Give me a couple of days and I'll see what I can do..... Unless you get a better offer that is 🙂

Sorry, that would be for Kiev's, Contaxes and Contaflexes only (possibly a few others). The Zorki's & Fed's take a completely different spool (if they need one at all that is, my Zorki 4K & Fed 5 have fixed spools).

Tarzak, you'll definitely have to machine your own. A used 35mm spool won't work as the shaft isn't thick enough. The Zorki 4 spindle is thicker than a 35mm spool. It might be easiest to find a piece of PVC or copper tubing that's large enough to just slide on, and then use a couple of set screws to fasten.

Sounds like a potentially permanent solution. I like the idea of a custom permanent spool.

Greyhoundman (thank you) has sent me a drawing of a Zorki spool, so as soon as my camera arrives (thank you zpuskas) out will come the verniers and I'll dust off the lathe and see what can be done.

Sorry the figures weren't in metric. All my training and tools are in the old decimal system.

No problem, multiply all measurements by 2.54 and they'll all be close to something in the "new" metric system. Blindly trust that the Russians use whole or half millimetre measurements, round off to the nearest and everything should fit nicely.

I will report on how much of a disaster that assumption becomes when I get the camera.

Hi, I'm a newcomer here!
First of all, hope you guys understand my broken English.
I met this problem too a couple of days ago and I made a DIY spool which works fine. I hope my experience is helpful.
Kin is right, The Zorki 4 spindle is thicker than a 35mm spool. It should be a good idea too find a "tube" which is just large enough to slide on. I found a old style metal 120 spool (comes with a 120 folder camera) meet the requirement very well. I took following steps to make the takeup spool.
Remove the lids and cut the "tube" to a proper length.
Fit a spring of a little lesser diameter to make the tube tighter and can apply more friction. 1.5 loops are enough.
Lastly, glue a plastic cap or something similar to make the whole thing stronger. The tip of a 2cc syringe is OK.
Since the "tube" is scrolled from a rectangular metal sheet, there should be a slot can accept the film leader. To make a little tab at the slot edge is also a good idea.
Even if such a 120 spool is not available, I believe a tin can is also a hopeful beginning.
I can post some pictures of the spool I made later, if someone feels this maybe helpful.

Sorry about the teaser - but it looks like GHMan has provided you with a dimensioned drawing. Just in case, here's mine with numbers added - I haven't worked out how to add lines or arrows, but I suspect you'll work out which numbers relate to what.

My camera is a Mir but I'm told that's the same as a Zorki 4 (but no slow shutter speeds). The tricky bit will be the internal shape - it's basically 11mm id but narrows down to 6.8mm at the small end, and there's an intermediate section that looks about 1mm narrower (10mm id) , that starts 19mm down from the big end. That intermediate section has two keys that mate with the keyways on the shaft in the camera that the spool slips onto. You'll see what I mean on your own camera.

If you need I could lend you the spool for a week while you copy it.
