Zorki 6 Shutter Stuck

I was trying out my new Zorki, running through the speeds with the back open to get a better feel to see if the speeds were right. I started at 500 working down to bulb, cocking the shutter before changing the speed. I tested B once and it worked. I cocked the shutter and pressed B again, the shutter opened but when I went to release the button, it seemed dead and the shutter stayed opened. Eventually, by wiggling stuff the shutter closed, but the shutter button is still dead in the down position. I also noticed that the two pins that meet up on the bottom of the sproket near the take up reel aren't touching. The lower one is out of sight.

Is it FUBAR? Can I strip it down and free it?

Check your re-wind collar that surrounds the shutter release. In normal use, just by depressing the shutter release, I've found that it can - and WILL - inadvertently turn itself into the rewind position enough to foul things up. Other than gunk and dirt, I don't know of much else that will keep the shutter release rod in the down position. Try turning it to the normal position and see if your problem goes away.

I must of twisted it when I was holding it down on B as I watched the mechanism work.

Thanks doubs43! What was that, like 5 minutes from post to problem solved? Makes most computer help forums look bad!

I haven't even run film through the camera yet, but I didn't realize that the shutter button would turn and lock like that.

I guess I could have read the manual, but my Russian is as good as my Japanesse.

Mark, welcome to the RFF. I'm relatively new myself.

The reason I was able to answer your question so quickly was because - surprise, surprise - I've had the same problem myself! I've learned to be very careful about the rewind collar when tripping the shutter. If I have one complaint about the Zorki-4, that's it.

You'll find this to be one of the friendliest places on the web and a great bunch of guys and gals from all over the world make it that way.

Umm, guys, by mutually misunderstanding yourselves, you solved the problem...
Walker, the Zorki 6 (unlike other Zorkis) has a seperate rewind button (that many users mistake for the shutter button when using the camera for the first time), not a rewind release collar around the shutter; however, by turning the depressed shutter button, it will lock in the down position (to give a kind of 'T' setting for long exposures, when the camera shutter is set to 'B'), and I guess that's what 'anselwannab' did.
However, you did work it out, kinda,... 😉

Roman, until you pointed out the difference between the Zorki-4 and Zorki-6 rewind mechanisms, I thought they were the same. I own several Zorki-4 cameras but I don't have a 6. Even though seldom used, I like the slow shutter speeds to be available and the 6 doesn't have them.

Ansel did use a Contax RF, though - so a Kiev would be more appropriate... 😉

Yes my first post, I've been lurking here, CVUG, photo.net and the great websites on the FSU cameras. Just got the Zorki that morning.

The anselwannab is what I use on yahoo for canonFD group. Kind of a joke.

My F1 set-up was to cumbersome to take on the road for business trips, so I got the Zorki since even a CV R2 is a bit rich for me. Have a collapsible I-50, and it fits in my pocket, albeit a heavy pocket.

I'm really enjoying the camera. Buddy came into my office and thought it was a Leica, should have seen his expression when he realized the text was Russian.

Overall, I'm very impressed. Kind of loud, but the RF is better than I expected.

I love my 85/1.8 on my F1, great snapshot/informal portrait lens, looking forward to gettin an 85/2 for the Zorki.

My Z6 is quieter than the Leica M4 I had the chance to compare it with - but after all, my Z6 was CLA'd by the famous Oleg of Mari-El...
You will love the 85/2 for its great bokeh!
You will hate the 85/2 for parallax issues when using it with one of the Russian RFs - it is absolutely impossible to get a full-frame close portrait with this lens on a non-parallax-corrected RF; it is so bad that I went and got a Bess R...

My solution for that problem was to put a Leitz Imarect finder on the Kiev for which I do not have a 28mm and use the Contax/Kiev finder on the Zorki-4 because I have an Orion-15 in LTM. So far, that has worked well.

BTW, thanks for the explaination of the words "burg" and "berg". 🙂

Ansel WOULD have used a Zorki, but they were much harder to get over here back in his day.

I don't have so much trouble with the 85/2 J9 on my Zorki 4, in fact it's my favorite combination. With my glasses I can't see the whole VF area anyway, so instead of a 50 I use the 85 and aim with the RF spot in the center.... the amount of the finder area that I see isn't so far from the 85mm coverage, it works out OK.
