Zorki top casing ding repair.

I bought what I thought was a nice Zorki 5 body on the bay, only to find it has a huge ding in the top casing.

The camera seems to work well enough with it.
The seller was helpful and offered a partial refund, so it came fairly cheaply.

Has anyone ever tried to beat out a ding like this? The case being brass puts me off having a go. I imagine that it would split easily. What do you think?

I would leave it the way it is.

differcult area to panelbeat, if the body is working fine i would not worry about it. Hey it is an FSU camera and this is another advantage!!! just imagine if you brought a leica with this - you would get about four pages of replies and would not want to be seen in public with it. Just make up some war story to go with the ding. and merry xmas

I have a similar ding on my Nikon FM2n. I think it's great.

Brass would be a fine target - the location is the problem, if you beat that ding straight, it will probably shift around the corner where you can't follow, or even cause the edge to tear.

Thanks for your suggestions. I guess it can stay as it is, I suppose it would look better as an honourable wound rather than an obvious botched repair.

If you put the top-case, upside-down, on a flat hard-wooden surface and used a sutable flat-faced round mandrel I reckon you could get most of it out. It looks as though flattening the top part would push rest back into the semi-circle it was. I don't think the brass would split, actually. Of course, you take a risk that things might not go so well so don't blame me!

I had thought along the same lines. I now wonder if a few creases will look worse than the dint as it is. I have a test roll in it at the moment. If the top must come off for a CLA I will look at what might be done.

Actually, if I were forced to reduce my FSU collection to one camera, the Zorki 5 is possibly the one I'd keep - although I'd take a while to choose between it and a Zorki 1!

Well, yesterday I had a walk in the park, with the Zorki 5 and a collapsible Industar 50, with APX400s.

Always fun to shoot a film off in one visit, I was quite excited when the neg strip was drying as I could see no obvious (or the usual) faults.

I used some APX400s (bb 2005) so got very grainy images from its dunking in ID11 at 1:1.

I usually fire off a few shots with an second shot of the same scene at the same settings, but with the camera inverted. This helps to show up shutter fade type problems....and it did here 🙁

Here are two such shots combined into one image.

Seems I have a CLA to do. The shutter looks as if it is slow to start until the second curtain is released. Usually we see a dark band here, indicating release problems. This is the first time I've seen it this way.
