I am simply amazed at the number of threads that fall into this category, both in this forum and on photo.net. The ones that really get me are the ones where the two halves of the equation are of very different character (e.g. Leica 50/3.5 Elmar vs. 50 Summilux Asph). But what is also amazing is that the answers are always the same! [It depends, what are you going to use X or Y for?, apples-to-pomegranates, X is better than Y, they'll have to pry Y from my cold, dead fingers and so on]. Much as I hate to say it, at current bandwidth the Web is not a great forum for actually comparing the subtleties of lens performance -- at least in terms of posting pictures. Sites like DPReview and Sean Reid's do a very good job, IMHO, because they tend to post detailed analysis of specific photographs in detail. But most of the responses to the X vs. Y query I have read tend towards generalization or report idiosyncratic experiences ("My [insert lens/camera name here] arrived with a [flaw, crack, junebug] in the [glass, metal, plastic, helicoids]. I'll never use [brand] again."]).
OK. Rant off. Donning asbestos undies and running for the hills.
