85/2.0 Sonnar Anybody??????

Hacker, u are really tempting me for the 85/2, size of lens not a problem to me. But luckily the price of the lens is not so tempting ha ha!

Based on MTFs the 85/2 is better then the ZF/ZK.... series of 85/1.4, was surprise because for this focal length SLR designs should not need to cater clearance for the mirror.

Go ahead and get the ZM 85/2!
Else get yourself a Nikkor 85/2 or old Zeiss 85/2 to start with.

PS, yes the ZF/ZK are not Sonnars. Although it has been discussed here that even the ZM is a kind of hybrid design.

Yes, the ZF/ZK series are Planars. I was thinking that for SLR design of 85mm there should not be restriction in design as the rear element should be far enough from the mirror. Maybe Zeiss purposely designed the ZM 85 Sonnar that way to make it attractive. The 40 cycle/mm MTF is very high at 80% at f4 compared to the 40cycle/mm MTF of ZF 85/1.4 at f5.6 which is only about 72%. But these are technical numbers anyway.

Very hard for me to buy the ZM 85 Sonnar. I still very much prefer 100/2.8 macro and 135/2 or 2.8 on SLR full matt focusing screen.

While not a Zeiss, Leica or Nikkor, the Jupiter-9, which is a Sonnar copy, is a great lens for portraiture. I just bought a '58 J-9 and it has become my favorite long long lens. I am now wanting to pick-up a Nikkor 8.5cm f2.0 as soon as the budget will allow.

As much as I would like the ZM 85/2, I would prefer to spend the money on Nikkor or Canon 85/1.5.

I would prefer the one-stop gain over having a new, larger lens with little performance gain over the Jupiter or Nikon sonnar's if I was going to lay out that much cash for a lens.

There is a version 1 hood that actually is the match for my lens. When reversed, the cap screws on to the back. There are some examples from KevinCameras.com.

The internal lens structure of Nikkor 85/2 looks the same as G-mount Sonnar 90/2.8 or C/Y-mount Sonnar 85/2.8.

no... or very very rare and scarcely available wartime lenses...
the only way to go around are : buying a contax ;-) or a bessa R2C, or buying an adapter re ;-)

Anyone shooting at f/2.0 feel the need for a viewfinder magnifier?

I tried one and found that the optical degradation of the image quality of the viewfinder by the magnifier exceeded the benefit of the additional magnification, so now the magnifier is languishing in a drawer. Perhaps I'll give it another chance again sometime soon.
