...but i'm still thinking about getting an rd1.
using my m lenses on the panasonic g1 has just strengthened my desire to try an rd1.
i'm fighting the urge...so far.

do it. when you like the rangefinder thing, nothing else will do it for you. it's not just the glass.

go for it!!!
i've looked at the pics from the G1 and they do not impress, especially for low light. nor does the cam have the tactile feel, the instantaneousness, nor the sheer joy of using that the R-D1 brings!

joe,
Go for it! I don't think you'll regret it and I certainly didn't. Besides, you won't lose much if you change your mind as resale value is pretty stable. The R-D1 is a joy to use.

back to basics
True, I like the R-D1 as well. Mine is coming back from Steve now, can't wait.
But Joe, I remember you getting into the CLE again, out of them already?

What happened joe? We were so proud ouf you.
I think what you need to do is go back to basics and get a Kiev kit.

i am completely content with my film kit, i love the 21 and the 25 and the 35 and the 50 sonnar, the zeiss ikon and the r4a...perfect for me and i have not been tempted in months to add anything, only to edit out (cle kit).
with the advent of the g1 and m adapter i may even be content with that as my digital m kit.

Using the G1 has driven me back to the R-D1 again. Don't get me wrong: I really like the G1, and I disagree with the quality comments about it above. But for manually focusing M lenses, nothing beats a real rangefinder. The 6MP sensor size is no problem. It took lovely photos in 2005, and it still takes lovely photos in 2009. Here are links to some recent theater shots with the R-D1, all taken using 50mm Summilux and 75mm Summarit.

that's just me being obnoxious. sorry! the G1 takes lovely photos.... but i still the R-D1 may be king for high ISO shots in this class of camera and that may be because of the only 6MP resolution.
i know a lot of people that are thrilled with the G1, but i just don't see the fun of focusing manually on a screen. again, it's my own humble opinion and i just know what i like....

Joe,
As recent as yesterday??? I saw a M8 with all accessories for $2600.00 US. There's an RD1 here for $1800.00..... just get it over with and buy the M8 already LOL. You know you want it.................. I've had both and for the extra $$$ you won't regret it.
Think of it like this.... you bought the G1 with all the fixin's for what $750? now you'll buy the RD-1 for $1500-$1750? you're almost there, you can do it Joe.

Joe, I just bought an RD1!!! I am hoping to receive mine by Friday. I had considered getting the G1, but I knew I would never be happy if it was not a rangefinder. Also, most R-D1 do not sell at $1800. Majority are under 1.4k, so there is still over a 1k difference between the M8 and Epson. Plus, M8 has no shutter crank!!!
Joe, the RD-1 would complement the G1 very well. Try it, if it doesn't work out, you can get nearly all your money back (or all if you buy right.)

Just do it, Joe. You won't be happy until you've at least tried it for a while. For my part, I think it's great. And though a little part of me longs for an M8, I know I would miss having to cock the shutter. There's really no other camera like it.

Joe,
What are you going to give up????????
I'd say go for it. I think it will make you happier than the G1

i like the g1, very much. and i like playing with the zm lenses on it. but...i do miss the rf experience.
1800 is too much for (me) the rd1, although tony rose has one that looks new, has a few extras and is in that ball park.
after selling off the sony plus lenses etc, i have enough in paypal to get one or get the 7-14 zoom when panasonic finally releases it.
but i think the rd1 plus the 21 zm might put a bigger smile on my face.

I tend to agree that a RD-1 and at ZM 21 will put a much bigger smile on your face. Combine that with your 50/1.5 ZM and I doubt you will ever frown again!

I know where this is going ... Joe is going all digital.
Go for it, Joe, this is the 3rd or 4th thread of you and Epson. Trade ZI + 25 against the RD.
Cheers,
Roland.

Keep the 25! It's too good a lens on film and should rock on a RD-1.
I'm going 20, 58 CV and a 180 Nikkor on a Nikon DXX. To me it's a classic triad.

i agree with B2. if i hadn't just weakened and gotten the SA 21/3.4 i've been lust after for so long, i would have jumped on your 25. i think i actually prefer it to the 21/28 ZM for it's unique draw. keep it a while longer!
