Hi William,

I have never tested them side by side. I should. The Tokyo seems to have nicer bokeh, the Japan seems to be sharper. So I use one for portraits, one for general purpose, currently. Here is a boring Tokyo bokeh shot:

I like this. Of course bokeh beauty is in the eye of the beholder ....

And now that I have one, I can only agree. The results, especially in color, are amazing and warm.

Yes, the color appears to be warmer with the old Zeiss lenses, as Jim said above. Images look great when left uncorrected in PS. The lens can preserve many grades of grey in the shade due to its low contrast. While the use of such lenses is known to be great with B&W film, it is equally great for pastel colors with color film such as Fuji Reala or Portra NC.

im with you. today i tried to shoot with the nokton 50 and i couldnt stay at a comfortable distance and get everything in a shot. i can get so much closer with the 35 or better yet a 28.

i dont think i got any good shots today.

IMO: Softer than a really good Zeiss Sonnar, more pleasing OOF than the Nikkor 5cm F1.4.

Nice shots Brian. I have rarely shot my Canon 50/1.5 at wide apertures (f/2 is the widest if I recall), but this prompts me to try it.

OffTopic: do you have an email id where I can ping you? I am interested in one of those franken-sonnars, or a Zeiss Sonnar pre or post-war lenses. :)

Tom, you don't have to defend the Canon 1.5 by yourself. It is one of my all time favorites. Just saying there are other lenses with good bokeh ... Here are some of mine (previously already shown 1.5 shots):

Right you are, Raid. And using just Fuji Superia 200 for less than $2 a 36 roll, I am getting amazing 'chrome-like results. Is this the end of B&W for me? I dunno. :confused:

Heheheheheh Ohh I know I`m just kidding around :)

I need to SHOOT more with mine, INSTEAD OF TALKING ABOUT IT!!!!! lol!!! :D

*I had a Canon f1.2 ~ "Tokyo" Nikkor f1.4 ~ a "Hacked" CZJ f2 Sonnar and a"Wartime" F3.5/50 Elmar day on Monday!!!!* (The Canon f1.2 on my M6 and the rest of the lenses on one of my 1945 "non stamp" IIIC K`s)

I was feeling daring and I NEVER shot the f1.2 before and haven`t touched an Elmar in years!!!! I also had a delightful model, fly in from NYC yesterday and we shot some crazy retro pinup and fetish work, so I will post the more artistic work someplace here at RFF at the end of this week when it`s all developed and scanned.....

I suspect the seller's reputation had something to do with that. But that's over 7 times what I paid for mine 4 years ago. Mine did need an internal cleaning. Oh, it also had a filter ring ding, removed by DAG.
