Before I go to bed, an answer to the Ind. Imp. trick question: Edward VIII was of course Ind. Imp. until he abdicated, and he didn't die until 1972. As Stewart said, Welsh, German...

There are several reasons why a thread like this proliferates, but perhaps the most important is that many people on RFF are both intelligent and passionate about communication -- and 'communication' can be both intellectual and emotional. Those with different intellectual or emotional viewpoints therefore argue. This in turn upsets that small minority which is anti-intellectal or anti-emotional (oftentimes because they refuse to admit that they are, in fact, either intellectual or emotional or both, or they wouldn't join in...)

Absolutely. Meanwhile, over at the DSLR sites, they're arguing about megapixels.
I do think that bucking the herd by using a rangefinder, and knowing why you do that and being able to explain it, is behavior more likely to be found among folks with an independent and self-aware frame of mind. We are much less likely to accept conventional wisdom.

England IS a nation in the literal sense
I'm not wanting to argue but to both you and Bill I will say that England is a Country.
Untill you can show me your certificate of English Citizenship, or a Citizen of England card or an English passport I will consider you to be a British citizen.
(I'm not English bashing, I was born there myself in the village of Kirkcambeck, pronounced "Kamerk", near Carlisle.)

"Tack Sharp!" gets on me nerves. grr...
I can still read image data from 20+ year old disks. And use a 17 year-old hard-drive in my DSLR.
Megapixels. That's plural. Didn't used to be plural. I have three DSLR's that don't need the "s" after megapixels. I'll have to shoot a concert with them.
Okay- Back on the thread. Words that I hate.
Windows.
Now where did I put that code that made the FPS-120b catch on fire?

I hate when people make 14bit dynamic range out of an 8bit signal.

i hate that i don't know what this means.
We had a Two-Band Infrared (4um-5um, 9um-11um) Sensor that was supposed to have 15-bit per pixels with 1 bit of noise and 9 bits turned out to be noise because the contractor did not adequately isolate the Digital and Analog electronics. That was in 1982.
Sangamo-Weston 28-track High Density Digital Tape Recorder, 11GBytes per reel. That was cutting edge for 1982. It was loud.
The tapes are no longer readable.

I do not what it means and can fully understand why everyone instinctively hates it.

Not a word, but a phrase: horses for courses. It gets bandied about a lot on here. :bang:
Most other annoying stuff has been mentioned (e.g. glass, soup, lense).

Is there any doubt in anyone's mind why using Film is so attractive and exciting?
If not, Roland and I can keep this up forever.
Texas Instruments Advanced Scientific Computer.
Coolest computer ever built. Vector Pipeline that could prefetch operands 25 clock cycles to keep the ALU spitting out 2 results per clock cycle, and 4 ALU's on the computer.
Used it for image processing. Cost $8M. 7-track tapes no longer readable.

I think what he is saying is that it really doesn't matter if England is a country or not. Scotland should be a country, though!

Isn't it coffee time ?
Think this thread was 5-6 posts when i read it the first time, fascinating.
About the gramarsplitting topics, do remember lots of people here have English as a 2nd language learned at school lots of years ago.
Would have been enormously fun to see all the nitpickers here debate in their 2dn language, lets say Spanish or German.
Back to topic is the phrase " Do you get film for that" annoying.
If I was shooting half-plates it might be appropriate question ..
But again , it might be just me . . .

From your perspective, then, nationality is something determined by Other People, by those with the power to issue passports and identity cards. I think of that as an attribute of sovereignty, and conclude that citizenship may or may not indicate national identity. We can't always equate sovereignty, citizenship, and nationality.

Spanish? No problem! (and that's my 2nd language)

FORTRAN is my primary language. English is a pain.
This, I can understand.
Some of the other topics on this thread escape me.
