just came back from a walk (my camera is always slung over my shoulder) and it looks like the M flash socket off of my M4-P has come loose and fallen off
has anyone experienced this with an M series camera before and is there a a part i can order and fit? or is this a more serious issue?

Hi,
Send the picture to Leica USA parts dept, so they know what parts to send you, approx. $30
is this a more serious issue?
No

I wonder if this is a systemic problem with M4Ps as I had it happen with mine too. In my case I was lucky enough to find the flash nipple that came loose. But it now will not stay in place - its as if the thing it screws into (the female screw thingy to use a technical term - no matter how you describe it, it always sounds rude! :^) ) is missing or broken. You may find that you have this too. If so I would dearly love to know what to do about it and how to fix it. as its a damn nuisance - for safety sake I have a piece of tape over mine to hold it in position as a temp fix so as not to lose it.

Hi Memphis,
I'll post a diagram tomorrow morning. Let them know the exact camera model. If I remember correctly M3/M2 cameras use a different size brass adapter.
Don't ask how I know this!

I've put some black tape over the M flash terminal for now (in case of light leaks and to prevent and dirt or grit getting stuck in there). Luckily the X flash terminal is secure in place and still functions.
i have emailed Leica regarding a replacement part and sent an email out to Youxin to ask if he is aware of this issue and if this is a simple part and install fix i can do.

rlouzan thanks - I have the parts shown in your diagram but its not clear why they fell out - it looks as if whatever they screw into has broken.

Hi Peter,
Three things come to mind:
1) Part N8 is missing.
2) Wrong brass adapter, not your case.
3) Damaged brass threads.
Let me know how it turns out.

Memphis,
Believe me, it is really simple!
Only seven parts (including the beauty ring). Some of them are just plain plastic, to isolate the M/PC center post.
I only use a rubber jar opener, to hand tighten everything
.

Thank you for that - what is part 8 that you refer to? It's hard to tell from the diagram. It looks like a circlip. Is that the case? If so it seems to me to be the most likely explanation for my inability to keep the nipple in place. i.e. The problem appears to be that whatever holds the other parts ishown in your diagram to the body or top plate of the camera is missing or broken.
Also do you know if the flash nipples must be removed first to remove the top plate - it seemed to me that they do but I am not sure (alternatively they lift of with the top plate.

Yes, I didn't know how it was called in English

If the circlip doesn't solve the problem, most likely, the Flashblock has to be replaced (the top plate must be removed to do so)

Peter,
Try the hot shoe, if the flash doesn´t fire send it in for a CLA and have them replace the plastic Flashblock. In the long run, it could end up jamming the shutter.

I lost both of mine last week on M4-2. Made of plastic!
Youxin Ye says "don't touch them or use them". GREAT.
Also looks to me like it has been glued in, from the look of it.
Two day repair time, cost $60.
Black electrical tape solves the problem for now, just no flash.

This was pretty common with the M4-2. Happened to my M4-2 when it was only a few years old. I was told by Leica that the broken piece inside could do more serious damage if not repaired. I would recommend you get it fixed ASAP.

OK, Thanks for the heads-up!
I'm going to cover mine with tape, after the repair!

Latest email from Youxin: I will let you know when its here. If the plastic bracket does not fell apart, which means we may have to replace it, it shouldn't be a hard work.
The plastic is soft, as far as I know, shouldn't have chips get into the camera and ruin the shutter.

it's just hide and seek
My M4 has the same issue, but my repair guy covered it from the inside with some tape, since I don't use a flash anyway.
