I always wondered what the Japan Camera Industry Institute actually used for criteria to put those "passed" stickers on cameras and lenses.

I wanted a black sticker actually, for stealth.

wait... when you clean the sensor with the sticker, are you supposed to use the sticky side?
If you want full Infrared, stick the orange sticker to the sensor.

The best camera is one that still works!
I always thought it was a patch to put over one eye ... to give you the correct Leica attitude!

I didn't get an orange sticker on my (used) M8 and now I feel left out.

Orange sticker for the Leica or orange sticker for the F2 wind cover...
I have both. Never use the Leica one.
Nah, I just want the orange sticker to stick to my Petri 7s Green-o-matic rangefinder.

Ummm, why wasn't it a RED sticker??
I taped over it.
I taped over it.

Shooter of Film...
Those JC-II stickers are real gold...right...???
I've always left them on...unless they're just about falling off...and you can always tell where they were after they are removed...(well at least on black paint cameras)

This is not regular sensor, very fragile, only 0,5mm cover glass filter, easy to crack.

That was a manufacturing flaw by Kodak, less than 30 cameras affected, solved for months now, not likely to repeat. Those cracks were spontaneous, btw and not due to force on the cover glass. Thanks fo this image

I was told many years ago that they were passed for export stickers. Nothing to do with camera quality control, but (I think) a tax thing. Everyone seemed to think it meant their camera was certified pure and good.

It was the time period... Japanese products being exported had some serious quality issues and it was starting to impact their trade / reputation. Given the quality and market for Japanese electronics these days, I'd say the quality control did have a serious impact.

I just think it's interesting that every used M8 I see still has the sticker on the body cap. I guess folks think about selling in the future and figure the buyer of an M8 would want that sticker still on there. Kinda like folks who leave the price sticker on the window of their new car for a few months.![]()
...or like some dumb asses leave the tailor's label on the sleeve of a suit coat. Do they think that is status? (sorry for the completely OT comment).
Actually I have had a mild interest in knowing about that orange sticker, but not enough to spend several (too many) grand to find out.

I thought I remembered reading in Modern Photography that there were in fact standards, and that cameras were periodically pulled from manufacturers line for testing to those standards.
I don't think the standards were up to current Leica standards.

Same with the plastic on the bottom plate... Though this is at least somewhat useful...![]()
My Wetzlar M6 still has that plastic.
O.T. I once assembled a lawnmover for my sister that she bought at Home Depot, and it came with all kinds of warning stickers to avoid litigation. One of the stickers said, "Do Not Drink Gasoline." LOL.
