FM2n Focus Problem

Hi all,

My FM2n isn't focusing properly. I took it on a trip to India and half way all my pictures started getting fuzzy whenever I stopped it down. I tried the lens' on another camera and they're fine. My first though was that the problem is the film plane on the door has somehow been inadvertently adjusted. Any ideas before I go buying a new door it doesn't fix the problem?

Check that the screen hasn't been knocked loose and is out of alignment. There isn't a lot of go out of alignment on an SLR. Because the viewfinder screen is interchangeable in the Nikon you have, they can cause a problem.

Well,

The focusing screen is pretty tight up there. Would it be loose? Or should I try replacing it?

The focus screen fits on a frame, and the frame can come unhooked.

If it is tight, most likely not the problem.

Make sure the mirror is coming to rest at the correct position. If it hangs ever-so-slightly, you have a focus problem.

Check the focus at infinity, it should be exactly correct or very close to being correct depending on the lens. If obviuosly off, unlatch the interchangable focusing screen frame holder and re-latch making sure it seats properly. If still off, send to Nikon service for repair.

Looks like there's just the smallest space in between the mirror and the plate below it..seems like that could be the problem. So, maybe I'll take it in to get a new one and slip in a new focus screen to boot.

The mirror should come to rest on a small arm located on the side of the mirror chamber easily visible with the mirror flipped up. Only if the mirror doesn't firmly rest on this arm when it's normally down would there be a problem with the mechanism.

Fuzzy on the negative or fuzzy in the finder? And how do you stop down? As far as I know the FM2n support an automatic aperture that closes the lens only at the moment you press the shutter. So there shouldnt be any difference in the finder if at f1.8 or f22.
