i have decided that i am not going to get an x100...at least not in the near future.
clearly, it looks like a very cool camera and i think it would be great fun to play with...but i do not need it. and i think i just might be better off either not spending that money right now or maybe investing in one fast lens. i want a faster lens for winter shooting and for indoor use. i still am leaning towards the 40/1.4 atm.


anyone else rethinking the x100?

I'm not. I truly have been waiting for a camera like it since getting into digital. Luckily, I was able to afford this and get some fast glass recently. I really think this camera, plus my M8 and X1, give me everything I could need for 99% of MY photography.
 
I was very interested and tempted, but my interest has waned a little. Currently eyeing a Hexar RF and Hexanon 50 (history repeating itself for me) and having fun with an EOS 650 and Fuji superia 400.
 
I was on the list. Then I got hold of another Hexar AF in fantastic shape, started using it, and the X100 GAS is gone.

I'll stick with film for another few years. Because it's fun.

BTW Joe, I have come to the conclusion that the 40/1.4 is a true jewel. If you like the FOV, it cann't be beat. Up there in quality with anything Leica or Zeiss have to offer.

Well it's kind of funny that the X100 fever attracted me to this forum, as it appeared over here the most sensible things were said about it. But on this forum, a lot of sensible things are said about film as well. I've always had a bit of a love/hate relationship with film (currently shooting pentax slrs and dslrs, and an olympus OM-1), and here i learned that getting rid of the stuff i hate (price and being tied to crappy jpg scans) isn't too difficult. So i got a scanner and will be getting processing gear soon enough. If it works out, I might be getting an R3A + 40/1.4 rather than an x100 sometime this year... If I miss the flexibility of digital too much (colour and ISO range), i might still be getting an x100.
 
That was bound to happen. Fuji created a perfect momentum, worked up the public well, but it cannot last very long.
Only those who really need this particular camera with qualities it has will wait, the rest will buy something else. No surprise here.

I shall follow your exploits as you narrow the search for a fast lens. The 40/1.4 sounds very good indeed.

I will wait for the X100. I've been waiting for a camera like the X100 since 2005. I can wait a bit longer. Everything I've read and seen since early January leads me to beleive the X100 will become an essential tool for my work.

On the other hand, if I thought the RD-1 would meet my needs, and owned two RD-1 bodies with a set of nice lenses, I wouldn't have wanted the X100 in the first place.
 
in the end i just thought that the x100 likely will not give me anything more than my rd1.
it won't make me a better shooter and the af is not really faster than the rd1 with 21mm lens set for hyperfocal shooting.
it's not the wait for the x100 that has turned me off and i find that kind of thinking insulting actually. if i were as tiny brained as the inference made i would think that i might be drooling on my keyboard.
and it has no connection to any film vs digital thoughts either as i am firmly committed to the digital process already.

in the end the question boils down to my real life photo needs and a fast lens is all i can come up with.
and i agree that the 40/1.4 is indeed a jewel.
 
I came to the same conclusion a couple of weeks ago and removed my name from a waiting list. This seems like the almost-perfect digital camera I've been waiting for and really got me excited in anticipation but logic and reason shook me out of my stupor. Considering the nice, capable cameras already in my possession made me realize the X100 simply isn't needed and would probably only cause analysis paralysis when it came time to pick one up and shoot.

That explains it!!! I heard a great sigh in The Force about 1 hour ago, but didn't know why. I was worried, actually a little scared. Now I can relax. 😀

You have probably made the best decision for yourself. Hang onto the money or get the fast lens. Fast lenses are cool too.

BTW, can you fix that moderator tltle? It's uncomfortable standing on my head, and hard to type too.
 
...just glue a viewfinder on any ol' point and shoot. It's NOT a rangefinder! How's it really different from the m4/3 or NEX or x1? Honestly?
Spemd a few more bucks and get an m8
