35mm pre-ASPH Summilux Lens Hood Options?

The problem is however that this combination causes vignetting: black corners, see Maddoc's (otherwise very fine) pictures.

The 12585 classic Leica hood can also be used, it gives a better shade-off, but vignettes also, although less than the square Summicron 35 hood.

The best solution is to look for a chrome 35mm f/1.4 pre asph Summilux with the ollux (12522) shade.

Paul, I have tried the hood for the 35mm Summicron-M pre-ASPH IV (last year, when I had one) and it did rotate on my Summilux-M so I gave up the idea at first. The hood for the ASPH 35mm Summicron-M fits much tighter and it doesn't rotate at all. Also additional friction is provided by the rubber o-ring filter combination. I glued mine into position that it fits very tight and needs some force to be mounted.

Thomas, in some photos I observe dark corners in some not. It depends a lot on the contrast, same as with my Noctilux.

Rich, thanks a lot for the photos and description of your setup. It looks like the most sophisticated and useful setup.

Spec, I use mainly a UVa filter for protection and sometimes a yellow filter for BW to increase contrast slightly.

Simply not true. I own both, and there is difference between them, but every single Summilux 35mm f/1.4 pre asph seems to be different from all the others, so no recompution, only sample variation.

I bought the old style Leica Metal/Plastic Hood 'IR00A'
for my Collapsible Cron
and Guess what
it works on my 35 Lux
yes the Hood can turn
but NOT so wobbly like the 35 pre asph's original Hood

Its Quite Smart Looking

Good idea Helen! Are you sure there is no vignetting? The 12585 vented hood vignettes, but only a very little bit. Is there a lot of viewfinder cut-off?

Well I haven't finished the Roll Yet :p
but will do it this weekend & develop it so the vignetting question will have to wait & see-
though I do think it will be ever so minimal or not at all.
The right bottom corner has abit of cutoff
but Does Not Diminish my Ability to Frame the Shot...:D

This is very interesting because the worst part of the rectangular hood on the 35/1.4 is the restricted access to the aperture ring tabs. I'm interested to know more details about the rear clip on mount you used and how much better is the access to the aperture ring.
 
It's a shame one of our enterprising Chinese aftermarket makers don't make a series of properly-designed rectangular hoods with clamps and caps for all these older lenses, they would sell a boatload of $50 hoods.

optimize hoods for rd1 and m8s which may allow for different sizes than full frame.

There are some advances, but not inexpensive, the Japan Exposures round vented hood has 2 filter mounts, a 40.5 and a 49 I think on the same hood.

Just my observation, I took some shots with my, new to me, summilux today using a 12524 rectangular hood. Shot at 2.8 on M9 I'm getting some vignetting. I also have a 12504 which came with the lens but I don't have a cap for it. Anyone know which cap I can use with the 12504? If I'm going to favour using the 12504 over the 12524 I'd prefer to keep a cap on it for protection when not in use.

As for stopping the hood spinning round I've also found white PTFE "plumbers tape" a good solution.

a E58 (58mm diameter snap-in cap) will work perfect. I bought a third-party OEM cap, tested with the hood an perfect !.

I recently saw on e bay a 12504 copy coming out of Hong Kong. I think it had a buy it now price of $75.00 but I know nothing about it. Joe
