Olympus Mju II eBay bargain still going strong

Am I the only one here that bought one when they were new?

I got mine for my wife originally and she hardly ever used it so it sat in a drawer for years until I found it one day and just started using it.

You aren't! I bought mine new in street shop about 8-9 years ago, for fantastic sum equivalent to $200. I used it as only camera, used it daily and on trips and finally it broke - couldn't lock focus anymore. Fixed it myself (technicians didn't not want to deal with super small and "finicky-to-repair camera" - their words) and retired it, now using on rare occasions.

It teached me compact camera isn't a toy and waste of time/money, got lots of well exposed and focused images and never ever regretted purchase!

Well, my FIRST one I bought new :D, after I got sick and tired of my Yashica T4's inability to focus in broad blazing daylight. I now have three. My original one has 11 years of regular use and looks it. Never a bad idea to have a back-up. But when I see one orphaned at a flea market...

A friend of mine bought one years ago but never used it much. He still has it, never uses it but refuses to sell it to me. ******* :D

Oops! just bought another Mju-I on evilbay. This time new and unused. ! Well it was lonely and needed a home.......... ??

Having tried many P&S cameras, I have to say - this is the best I have tried, :

Yet some others come close:

Besides The Mju-II I bought in 2001 and still use (there is actually a roll of FP4+ from it waiting to be developed) I recently bought one for 2Euros at a flea market. Almost like new, with original box and warranty card.

And as to what a Mju-II can do, and what no other camera I have ever owned can:

Aaaaaah now I want one!

This came in the post today Mju-V (Stylus select 105) in very good condition and it was a steal at 99p. one more for the collection.

Mju V is spectacular compact! First I thought it will be clunky and not nice to use, but it's really compact and I like shutter release better than on Mju II aka Stylus Epic. Pity it uses wimpy CR2 battery - they could make rear extension little bigger as battery anyway is located out of body.

OMG, I feel real stupid now. I had no idea such bargains even existed... SNIP !

Hi,

There's dozens out there just waiting for you. Most of them with a dead battery in them and a half used film. But all priced very stupidly because no one wants them.

Keep an eye open for them and you'll be surprised. But do check the battery compartment.

By the mid 90's most of them, in the hands of an idiot, could get most shots just right. And most of them had very good lenses in them. Look carefully and you'll find them with EV compensation (usually a +1 or +2 adjustment and hidden in the flash or mode sequence). Another useful feature is a "landscape" mode that works through windows etc and isn't distracted by reflections as it's either focussed on infinity or a hyper-focal setting.

To be safe, carry a couple of batteries with you to check them (CR2 and CR123) are the most popular ones needed.

Regards, David

Thanks btgc.
Mine came with a spare battery. I think Imay load it with colour film as it is less suited to low light use than Mju-I or mju-II and it may be the ideal outdoor camera for country walks.

Kind of off-topic, but has anyone here used a Olympus Infinity Jr.? I just found a super clean one a few weeks ago for $2. I haven't shot any rolls with it but I keep taking it off my shelf to play with it. There's something hypnotic about this camera that I can't explain.....it just feels 'right' in my hand. Super loud too. Sounds exactly like my Pentax ME Super with auto-winder.

Anyone shoot with an Infinity Jr.? If so, how does it compare to the mju II? Has a 35mm f/3.5 lens (4 element) that looks half-way decent.

is the Mju 1 as good as the Mju 2 (not zoom).

Different. Lens is no slouch either, but f3.5 and not f2.8. Shutter lag is longer. No spot-meter. Slowest shutter speed on the Mju 1 is 1/15th of a second. The Mju-II has a mode where it can fill-flash AND keep the shutter open longer. All in all the mju-1 is more basic, but also very capable.

Greetings, Ljós

The mju-ii seems to be sharper at closer distances, out to 15 feet or so, but gets a little muddy at infinity. Anyone else seen this, or is it just me?

And yes, this is fairly typical of the streets in my town. That is why I chose it.

I hit all the thrift stores on San Mateo yesterday (or nearly all) and came up empty. The elusive Stylus Epic...

I took my Mju II to Yosemite this weekend, and loaded it with Pan F Plus. All in all it performed pretty well. I couldn't slap filters on it, or set up for very long exposures of waterfalls and creeks, but it did what I needed it to do in the daylight on the trails and vista points.

I did get one instance where a light leak became a problem, I'm not sure what to do about it.

I would swear these were taken with a decent SLR!
