While the mininum number of cameras one should own is three, the correct number is n+1, where "n" is the number of cameras currently owned. This equation may also be re-written as s-1, where "s" is the number of cameras owned that would result in your wife filing for divorce.
I think I could make it with one. I think.

Take care also to marry the right woman. I don't even know how many cameras my wife owns...

what?
Of course, there is no limit on the maximum number of cameras that you can (or should) own.
Oh . . . a joke . . . .
I got a camera for my wife.
Best trade I ever made

There is a maximum, as stated: S-1.

No danger of reaching S. It is self-correcting. As soon as you reach it, half of them become hers (at least where I live).

Uh... 17? Am I close? Did I win? I am not good at math people. Just let me know when I have enough cameras and until then I will assume your silence means I have not yet reached the minimum I should own and will keep buying them. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure I getting along with 2 :
MM & M9. If I could only have one it would be the MM, no doubt about it.

Exactly! It would be hard to get by with none, so one is all you NEED. Want is a different sort of animal....

Idont have a wife, so I'm limited solely by financial and spatial constraints.
Now, if I had a Tardis to keep them in....

The minimum number of cameras one should own is /0, i.e., undefined, or in internet slang, an epic failure.

I am most certainly an amateur, and since I am not even a great amateur, even one may be more than I really should be allowed. But it is so much more fun when you have more toys.

It depends.
There are different camera types and different types of photographers.
The mid-range/pro camera for whatever.
The backup to that camera if you're actually a professional.
The medium format if you're a fashion/portrait/commercial photographer.
The compact P&S for family outings and quick pics.
The cell phone camera that's always with you because it's in your phone.
For me I have
My Leica M9 for assignments and personal work.
My Canon 5D mk2 for assignments/sports/real estate/events/backup and personal work.
My Nikon P7100 for trips to the park with my family and ebay photos.
My cell phone camera because it's always with me.
A Canon FTb because it's film and I like having at least one film camera.
I want an Olympus OM-D to supplement the 5D. There are occasions I need a long lens, but not necessarily an SLR.

While the mininum number of cameras one should own is three, the correct number is n+1, where "n" is the number of cameras currently owned. This equation may also be re-written as s-1, where "s" is the number of cameras owned that would result in your wife filing for divorce.
It has been determined that the minimum number of cameras a man should own is x-1, where 'x' is the number of pairs of shoes the mans wife owns. The relationship between s and x remains undefined.

You got it all wrong.
"s-1" is the number of gear-related boxes that you have received by mail in the past.
Therefore, "s" is approximately equal to the number of lenses that you own.
"n" can be anything between [s/3 .... s/1], depending if you are a 28/50/90 or a "1 camera, one lens" person.
