as some of you might know...today is my last day of work...next week i join the ranks of the unemployed & looking for work group!!

as a parting gift to myself...i'm thinking of buying the sony rx1...

ok...yell at me now!
 
You already have 2 good cameras, adding the RX1 will will mean that more of your gear sits without any use. Is it just GAS that's getting to you? If so, you might want to reconsider!
 
As one who got laid off almost 4 years ago, be easy on your purchases. I have been doing all sorts of stuff to get by. Luckily my wife has a good job, but with a small son, I have to make sure my priorities are in line. If purchasing new gear gets you to a place that will get you future income, great. If not, and you can live with what you have, stick with it. One never knows what tomorrow may bring.....or not.
 
All your purchases and bag shuffling really only hide a huge empty hole. You should fill that hole with something that heals the soul. You are too old for thos buying and selling business.
Reading a book, drawing, painting are cheap activities that heal the soul. Photography, as a hobby also heals the soul. But it seems that your hobby is not photography.

If I was yoh I'd be seriously asking myself questions. I already did, in my case, and my conclusion was simple: all these cameras and lenses are all pure junk.

A good book goes a long way!
 
I was laid off in Spring of 2004. It was not pleasant although I tried to make the best of it, with mostly good success.

If you have enough reserves and expect to find a new position, or retire, well inside your comfort zone, why not get yourself a new camera if you want it?

It was the end of 2008 when the Great Recession did me in financially. I managed to obtain a good position again, finally, at the beginning of 2011. Those were a couple of very dark years, but nothing I'd done in 2004 to 2008 would have changed that. The Great Recession crushed my business and consumed all my reserves.

Such it is, we cope and move on.

If you can afford it, and really want it, then why not.

I will say this however, you probably don't really want it.
 
Perhaps wait until you get the next job and then treat yourself. That said, then you won;t have as much time to use it. You can always sell it fo0r 75% of new if you end up needing the cash badly.
 
Sony RX1 or any camera for that matter is not an antidepressant, in fact they add to the tension and anxiety when too much money is involved.

I think this is hitting it on the head. We think that retail therapy works, but it does not.
 
I wouldn't do it, but I haven't just qualified for the Canadian PP. If you do it, consider it your Pension Plan Camera. If you don't do it now, I'm sure the darned thing, or one far more shiny and alluring, will be waiting for you later. Thegman is right about the efficacy of retail therapy. It hasn't done well in clinical trials. Nine out of ten dentists surveyed... Anyway, if you buy it, use it and enjoy.

Another question is does he really need to shoot a farmer's market that often and with the latest and greatest?

In my case, I wouldn't even consider taking a camera to a farmer's market. Maybe an iphone fr obe or two shots but that's it.

I think a deeper analysis is due.
 
Go have a look:
Handle the camera.
Put it down and go back home.
Leave it for a week.
Then wonder about the purchase.
You might even find that the price has gone down by then!
Will you need to buy a bag for it?
You even might be looking at the specs of a camera even 'better' by then!
And it isn't the camera that finds the pictures to take is it?
And I happen to like the pictures you take with your present gear!

That's not very nice. We all use cameras for different reasons. Just because his subject matter doesn't fit your preconceived notions of what photography is doesn't mean he's not allowed to enjoy using the latest and greatest.
 
If it was me (and it's not), the last thing on my mind after being laid off would be spending precious cash on something that duplicates what I already own. The rapid inherent depreciation of digital equipment would make a purchase like that even more painful and cause me to feel exceedingly foolish.
