This may be true of 35mm Pentaxes, but the 645, designed for professional use, seems to be abundant in near-mint condition. Considering that these were targeted at pro wedding photographers (weddings shoots are like combat zones, but with better food), I'm puzzled but happy that there's so much nice, mint equipment available cheaply.

It is right that the Pentax 645 models were also designed for professional use.
But the minority of them have been used by professionals. And that is also valid for almost all other medium format cameras.
Because I remember an interview with the Hasselblad global sales manager about 20 years ago: He said that about 80% of all Hasselblads have been bought by enthusiast amateurs, and only the rest by professionals.
A little bit later after that interview I asked at a photo fair Rollei about that topic: And they confirmed these numbers as valid for them, too.
The enthusiast amateur market has always been essential for the medium format film camera manufacturers.

Ah, activity on the Pentaxian thread!

I was a Pentaxian about a decade and a half ago. You're motivating me to pull out my SMC-Pentax-L 43mm f/1.9 Special, fit it to either the M4-2 or CL digital, and go make some photos with it. That's the last piece of Pentax equipment I own... and the 43/1.9 lens is my all-time favorite Pentax lens. 🙂
