ELCAN replica lens posts

It is, Raid, but hard to maneuver in — about a foot+ of snow. This winter weather feel more like “the old days” — it was well below zero for several days prior to the storm. Not that much to photograph.

Your area of Florida doesn’t get this, of course, but I have been there in January where it was below freezing, and the water hose to our camper had frozen during the night.

We can get freezing weather here at times. Tonight will dip to 37F, but on Sunday it may reach 28F.

Emile,
I have a lens, a 105/6.3 Mountain Elmar, that had bad flare, but it took awhile to figure out why this was happening. I bought some high tech flat black acrylic paint, and touched up screw heads inside the lens barrel and the like. The flare disappeared. The old flocking had worn off and was causing the problem when the lens was used with a bright light near the image.

Can you use Live View, and perhaps see what might be going on? When the lens is wide open, rotate the camera to see if the flare is evenly distributed, or only occurs in some positions. You might then have an idea if something inside the camera is flaring. And, if you are able, clean the sensor.

Thanks for doing the iPhone image, and for showing your hood selection. I use a cheapie Chinese generic screw-in hood which is nearly the size and shape of the original ELCAN hood, but a bit more shallow. It has worked well, and may be close to historically accurate.

I also love this little lens ergonomically and photographically, and currently use it a lot.

Enjoyable images, with a pretty narrow DOF from appearances.

I have used my ELCAN replica mostly for portraits, which are neither close-ups like these, nor scenics / landscapes. I especially like the way the lens performs at 3-5 feet range, almost wide open.

Yesterday, I decided to take some landscapes. Here are two, both at f/8. The one with the sun in the upper left corner is of the tracks a deer made, trudging through the snow. I almost did not post these, as they are rather anodyne IMO. But they do show how the lens performs in such circumstances.

The red object is the tree on the left of the second mage is not a reflection or an artifact, but something caught in the tree branches. I did not see it when making the image.

Did some more tests today...with 4 more 50mm's...they all flared badly..that window is a real torture test..
No shades..all wide open...
So the lens is fine and I'm keeping it. I got this for a very good price. If anyone is interested contact me I can send his contact info. I think he has a black and chrome coming in soon and he will test lens before shipping.
** I may have mixed up the lens titles on the pics..in any case..there is flare present all all of them.

In fact the LLL Elcan is the best of the bunch.

Incredible lens. I love the bokeh, the freedom from distortion and the sharpness.

Erik.
