While clearing out some office clutter I came across a DVD (remember them?) with this image on it. Taken in Roanoke, Virginia for Southern Living Magazine about 18 or so years ago, it was part of a story on Roanoke, Virginia and its great Link Museum (if you’ve never been, you owe it to yourself to go and see it). This was a coordinated photo with Norfolk Southern and I only had about five minutes to take the photo. I was told that the only other time a Norfolk Southern (formerly Norfolk & Western) train was stopped specifically for a photographer was for O. Winston Link!

Nice! Mike if you get the chance to see a conductor car with a Seiko pocket watch in the dash snap a picture for me please. I saw one a couple years back, a female conductor on the JR Yokosuka line pulled one out of her duty bag and set it on the dash as she was taking over.

Hard to believe Japanese trains companies are the last to use the mechanical pocket watch for precision schedule timing.

Hi Gary! I have one of those watches. My wife bought it for me 26 years ago.

A sweep second hand gives a better visual of time spent and time to go, much easier to use than a digital for getting to the next train station on time.

Hi Mike, wow that is one nice looking Seiko! Take it with you on your next train outing and sync it to the station clock, you might get a odd look from the platform conductor. 😎
