Does a portrait of my dog count? I took this with my Pentax SL and 50mm f/1.4 S-M-C Takumar lens. Taken in an apartment where we lived for a few months while our house was being built. I sorely miss the north-facing windows of that place!

This was shot 30 years ago with a Yashica 124G. Film was probably TMX. I remember we were at Polk and Post Streets in San Francisco waiting for our pizza.

Keith: Superb! So good to see another photo where the natural light is such a major part of the photo. The portrait is defined by the soft unidirectional light coming in from the window. You certainly understand what the theme here is about.

Havana, Cuba - woman holds her grandchild while her sick husband sleeps facing the open window. They live on the 3rd floor of a building with no water pressure so much carry buckets of water for drinking, bathing, and flushing the toilet up the steps.

Erik: thanks. Undoubtedly, I shot several frames of this family but I have always edited first and then scanned only my selection. So I choose this frame from a strip of negs on the light table, scanned it and moved on as I have no use for second place images. I have a good collection of images of normal Cuban people in their native environment that I made over a number of years, this in 2011. They are published in my book, "Vignettes Cubano" and on my website at Cuba intro

Cienfuegos, Cuba 2011 - This 23 year old lives with her mother in an 8' by 20' wooden house. Her 42 year old mother also has a baby which appeared to be the same age as her daughter's. They survive on social benefits and the kindness of friends and neighbors as both are permanently unemployed.
