#USA23-07 Devil's Tower, Wyoming, 31 May 1979
My first sight of Devil's Tower, known to Cheyenne as Bear's Tipi or Bear Lodge, because so many bears lived there. I couldn't have wished for better light and atmosphere. No surprise it was chosen as a setting for Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind movie. Taken through the van window, as with most of these pictures.

I never made it to Wyoming either. Again, my loss...

At my age I doubt I will ever get back to North America, tho' my partner is now making 'suggestions' about a possible visit to California, Arizona and New Mexico for us later this year. Thanks to this thread, Lynn.

At my age, visiting Disneyland for the first time ever, (I never made it in 1979 or 1982) no longer greatly appeals, but if I must, then I will. More to my liking, if we do fly again across the big bathtub, I reckon we will get to revisit Hawaii which I'm more keen on, I always enjoyed the place. Lynn, did you spend time in Honolulu on your flights to and from the USA? If yes, your slides of Waikiki, Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, the Old Chinatown (where I used to stay in a cheap serviced apartment so long ago, all those $2 buffet breakfasts, wow!) would be enjoyable to see. I can't seem to find my own images of Hawaii, they are somewhere in the clutter and mess of our (insulated and temperature controlled) garage which I use as my darkroom and den. As my one and only new year 'sresolution for '24, I will definitely look.

Anyway, all the best for '24. Keep on making good images and please post more, and may your endurance for endless scanning go on forever and a day. Thanks to you, we are all enjoying all this vicarious travel...

As my only time in America was in 1988, I wonder how much of it would be in any way familiar? Surely all the major places like Disneyland, the Las Vegas strip, the San Francisco piers etc would be different by now. We stayed at places like the Anaheim Hilton, the Ala Moana Hotel, the Hilton in New York. We ate at a very pleasant Italian restaurant in New York within walking distance and I regret not knowing its name. If you were to go to America @DownUnder it would almost be as if you were going for the first time.

Disneyland was OK back then but apart from being older now I wouldn't visit because of privacy concerns. Maybe I'm just old fashioned.

Never been to Hawaii, my flights were SYD-AUK-LAX and return with Pan Am (remember them?). Would love to go there one day.

All the best to you (and to everyone reading this thread) for 2024.

Lynn

I covered a lot of this same eastward, more northerly journey on a trip when I was in 8th grade. This would have been the summer of '88 and I shot it on 110 film. Won't share the results though ;)
