What would this have been? Resembles a Karmann Ghia, but it looks like it has a grille.

Yep, that's a VW Karmann Ghia body, but the front end was "custom modified" by someone. The "grill" is actually a bunch of duct tape put there for who knows what reason. The headlight buckets have also been angled back a few degrees, which looks nice but it was never finished. And the front turn signals were deleted. Could have been a nice looker, but like so many of these projects the customizer learns the hard way that the devil is in the details when it comes to actually realizing the vision. And so we have a pile sitting out in the woods at my buddy's place.

Nice idea! But I'm pretty sure there's no title, and that makes it tough to sell. I think my pal is going to hang onto it. It's got some decent metal still and that stuff is good for patching up other cars.

Hmm -- where I live (CT) if the car is more than 20 years old, you don't need the title to transfer ownership. I figured that was the case in most states.

What's totally crazy here is a Karmann Ghia was my first car . It was literally towed from the back yard of where I bought it. There seemed to be more of the car on the lawn than on the tow truck ! It enhanced my mechanical skills

What year? I can relate to the project aspect of it. I recently bought a '56 Karmann Ghia project. I've had Transporters and Beetles but never a Ghia. I suppose my friend could sell the body without a title, but only to someone who didn't want/need the car to be on the road again. New Mexico is picky about titles, especially for vehicles never titled in the state. Every car coming in from afar requires a VIN inspection, at least for those we want to drive. I believe the title is the proof of ownership here. I can title a car without registering it, though.

My dad bought a new 1964 Ghia when I was in high school. Beautiful Robin egg blue green and white.
My wife and I bought a 71 Ghia that was still in pretty good condition and fully restored it. We drove it for a few years and eventually sold it.
