Diners, drive-ins, and dives

Thanks to @Guth and the many fine images posted here, I have done some reading about the American diner and how it unique to the US. The closest we have in Australia are cafes and small family restaurants that were started by migrants in the 60s and 70s.

One such family restaurant/cafe is Fong's in the Melbourne suburb of Bentleigh. It was started prior to 1961 by Chinese immigrants who brought their children into the business as time went on. Like many family-run immigrant restaurants, the parents ran the restaurant while the children did their homework in the back rooms or at a distant table. Fongs was product of its time, originally serving a combination of Australian food and Chinese food that was tweaked for the white Australian palate, while now it has a completely Chinese menu. Now that I know this, I will have to visit and take photos.

The oldest cafe in Melbourne is the famed Pellegrini's, an Italian restaurant that opened in 1954. It is credited with bringing Italian coffee culture to Melbourne and continues to be owned and run by Italian immigrant family. Sadly, one of the owners was stabbed to death during a terrorist attack in 2018. Surprisingly, I have not been there either, which adds to the list I must visit and photograph.
