Some new photos from Fort Wayne

I haven't posted much in the last year and a half due to health problems. I'm trying to get back to my fine art photography and documentary projects, and last week I went out and spent a day in some small towns I have not visited in nearly 20 years.

This hot rod stretched limo was sitting next to the garage as Eel River Rod and Customs just outside the small town of North Manchester, Indiana. I've never seen a hot rod limousine; and it has Texas Longhorn cow horns on the front! "Hot Rod Power Tour 2025" is painted on the side windows. The Confederate flag license plate says "In God We Trust."

I photographed it last Friday. I'll be posting more photos from that day over the course of this week!

Burger Dairy is a convenience store located in a little shopping center on Wells Street, just north of Third Street, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The banner in the window says "We Are Open!" The store had been closed for a long time after a car drove through the brick storefront in December, 2023. You can see that some of the brickwork looks newer than the rest of the brick facade.

The red awning over the store used to say "Discount Tobacco."

The former City Hall building in the small town of Akron, Indiana. The brick building, whose garage doors have been covered in corrugated steel, is on Rochester Street (State Road 14), between Mishawaka Street and Center Street. An Indiana state flag flies from the front of the building.

I found it on Maps. It looks like a very clean little town.

It is. I hadn't been there in 20 years! I drove through several small towns that day: North Manchester, Akron, and Rochester. Had intended to visit the next town on the highway, Winamac, but it began to rain hard so I went back to Fort Wayne. All three towns I went through are nice places; Rochester and N. Manchester are a little bigger and nicer.

This pair of "Selfie Wings" is painted on a boarded-up window on the side of the Times Theater building in the small town of Rochester, Indiana.

It has recently become a trend for women to do selfies while standing in front of wings painted on a wall. Originally they were white wings made to look like angel wings, but now bird wings and butterfly wings are becoming popular, too.

The Times Theater on Main Street in the small town of Rochester, Indiana.

This historic theater was abandoned for some time before a nonprofit group restored it. It now plays movies and serves as a music venue. The electronic sign on the marquee says "Thanks REMC." REMC is the electric utility that serves Rochester; they probably donated money to the theater.

Nice to see that reopened.

I am struck (and why it took me this long to think of it, I don't know) at the complete lack of people, animals, vehicles -- in short, evidence of life -- in your pictures. I like it, frankly. Focuses on the buildings entirely. Either you had to time your photos accordingly, or there really aren't a lot of folks around!

I have an occasional person intrude into my photos 😺

Sometimes, I even photograph people!

mem-day-parade2021-2.jpg

Richard Robinson stands behind his "Veterans For Earned Healthcare" art car. He drove the car in the 2021 Waynedale Memorial Day Parade in Fort Wayne. Wayndale is a part of the city that was a small town until 1957, when it was annexed by the city. It still looks like a small town and has a small town culture separate from the rest of Fort Wayne. The city has a memorial day parade, but Waynedale has always had its own separate parade.

smoky-montgomery1.jpg

Charles "Smoky" Montgomery, was a local icon in Fort Wayne, Indiana. For fifty years, he spent his days behind the counter at Smoky's Records on the corner of Wells Street and Sixth Street. His store was filled with thousands of old vinyl records; while Smoky was a walking encyclopedia of music knowledge. He also sold guitars, organized bus tours, and sold concert tickets.

He passed away in 2006 at the age of 84. When he died, the store closed. It sat untouched, with the records still in their racks, until 2019. His family then finally sold the more than 20,000 vinyl records and other items to another record dealer.

I do like to have my photos free of people and cars. It is surprisingly easy; there aren't usually many people walking the streets in Indiana's small towns, and when there are, I just wait and shoot the picture atfer they walk past.

I enjoy these a lot. Should find your way north and west a bit, you may enjoy walking the streets of Galena, IL that has much this same flavor.

I don't get out of Indiana much anymore. I don't have much income anymore, so I can't afford to go far anymore. My son bought me a tank of gas so I could go on the trip I took on the 13th, when I visited North Manchester, Akron, and Rochester. Rochester, the furthest of the towns I went to, is a little over an hour drive from Fort Wayne. I was sick almost all of 2024 and did very little photography that year, even close to home. I'm finally getting to where I feel up to going out and carrying a camera again. Sounds like Galena would be a place I would like, though. Is that where you live?
