tariffs are real

I think I’m out of luck - 9903.01.25 is the new 10% tariff. Unless I can find proof where it was suspended for Japan on the import date (hard to do with the seemingly daily changes coming out of the WH) I’m stuck.

Others, like Fujifilm, seem to be more stealthily rolling them into the price of new models, and spreading the joy to all markets.
I would be surprised if Fuji calculated that it was worth risking their sales to Europe, Asia and the rest of the world, by putting up prices globally in order to shield US consumers from the actions of their own government. I would have thought it more likely that they'll start producing US only versions of their products, perhaps function limited or with cheaper construction / finishes, to allow a more palatable end user purchase price in the US after tariffs have been applied.

I agree with your first point, but as for your 2nd statement....
I really doubt that Fuji would create new products just for the US market, to ease the burden of........ US tariffs.

Correction:
Canadian price for X Half is the equivalent of 730 USD (Vistek) before taxes, compared to 850 for USA
Great Britain: 699 pounds (Wex) or ~950 USD!
EU: 699 Euro (Fuji-store.de) or ~818 USD.

what was the import date? If it was after April 5 then you're stuck with 10%.

Not much point in comparing to the UK - we've always been hit with higher prices than pretty much anyone else, on top of which we voted to impose trade restrictions on ourselves with Brexit <sigh>.

If Fuji has any common sense - which it seems they have shiploads of, going by their product lines, global reputation and certainly their excellent warranties on all the photo gear they manufacture - they will let things go on as they are, and let the American buyers pay the tariffs. Or auto-add the new tariffs (which admittedly change from week to week if not day to day). So if you want something from Fuji, you order it and you pay for it, end of story. Or you buy secondhand in the USA, and save a packet but with some (very small) risks.

This would be the best course of action given the endless day to day to-ing and fro-ing and chopping and changing on tariffs and trade going on. We live in confusing times...

UK currently has 10% which means the cost of Ilford film goes up but since they're the only ones making a chromogenic film anymore (and I've standardized on XP2+ in both 35 & 120), whelp, I guess I just eat that cost.

It is what it is.

It all depends on where you live & on your financial and political inclinations?
All these forums are pretty global aren't they?
I live in Canada...so there's no 10% on Ilford.....

America but the current UK government bent the knee to Trump instantly so only has 10%. And as I said, no one else makes a Chromogenic anymore so Ilford is it.

the days of free imports are over. i bought a $1000 lens from Japan on eBay. it was delivered by FedEx and, as it has been forever, i thought that was that.

but no.

this past week, i received a bill from FedEx for $120 -- for duty and taxes.

in 20+ years of buying camera stuff internationally, i have NEVER be billed for duty and taxes. EVER.

Yay for America?
In Australia when buying on eBay any taxes / duties are added to the final bought for price and rolled into the settlement price on ebay. That way at least you know what you are up for.

There is NO tariff of good from Japan currently. Trump threatens to impose a tariff on Japan on August 1st, which is still 3 weeks away.
Trump sets 25% tariffs on Japan and South Korea, and new import taxes on 12 other nations.
So all this hullabaloo about FedEx charging a Tariff is just ignorance. FedEx (randomly I think) will impose a fee to inspect a package to determine if a tariff is required. I've been caught in this scam before. Anymore I will only accept international packages shipped via postal carrier. For example to ship a package to Canada (and this was 2 or 3 years ago) FedEx charges $25 on top of the shipping fee - no matter the amount declared.

On a slightly different note how is a Tariff different than a tax on US producers. Taxing US producers another 25% is wildly acceptable for one political party.

This is not correct, in several ways.

First, on April 5, a 10% adder was enacted for Japan. @Ken Ford even listed the relevant harmonized tariff code for this 10% adder (charged on top of the free duty for his S3 Olympic.)

Second, there are many goods from Japan that have had tariffs for a long time. A few examples: contact lenses (2%), projection lenses (2%), optical telescopes (8%), slide projectors (7%)

Commercial carriers (UPS, Fedex, DHL) will charge brokerage fees if they act as broker for imported goods. No doubt commercial carriers sometimes collect in error, no one is perfect. Sometimes this is due to incorrect or missing codes or shipper errors. It's not due to random fees or inspections or scams. 😀

It is true that shipments via post, to individuals (as opposed to commercial businesses importing as part of commercial trade) can usually escape duties even if they were supposed to be collected.
