M10 Battery BP-SCL5 availability

I don't believe there is a shortage any longer as of 09/25
I did purchase a new BP-SCL5 and it works as designed.
I do have an NOS that was still in the box, but I can not get it to charge at all.

The new manufacture batch came through in April as mentioned higher up in this thread. Leica has them in stock, but I think their manufacturing runs are pretty small. Stores generally don’t have as many as they did when the M10 series were new.

Most of the NOS batteries from the first run are dead like the one you describe. I have several in this condition.

Slight update on the Amazonable battery - I've found that if I recharge my M10 Leica battery and do the same Amazon battery, the Amazon battery will lose charge far quicker then Leica battery will.

Quicker in the camera or quicker self-discharge? And how many charge-discharge cycles have you put them through?

I’m reviewing the third party BP-SCL5 batteries and am finding some interesting things, including that reviewing batteries for performance is hard.

I guess the real lesson of all this is to buy several spare batteries when buying a new digisnapper.

It’s only really Leica that makes ongoing battery access difficult. I can still buy high-quality batteries for my 2001 Kodak DCS 760M.

And I bought 5 spares when I bought my M10. Those ones are wearing out now - actually they were noticeably decrwased in performance by the end of 2023. They at that time had about 300 charge-discharge cycles on them and on a 35C+ day don’t last very long. I now have a pile of Leica and third party spares, but it was a dire situation for over 18 months.

The real lesson is supporting right-to-repair regulation. There's no reason Leica needed to chip their batteries other than to lock out third-party vendors like HP does with their printer ink.

Quite agree. It's just that @weatherproof suggested the chip was to lock out 3rd party vendors which clearly is not true when 3rd party batteries are available.

Sure, indeed. The third party batteries have reverse-engineered chips, which have some problems. I know I’ve been saying it for a while but I’ll get to posting my review of BP-SCL5 at some point and go into this at some length.

My main camera is the Monochrom Typ 246, and when it dawned on me that the camera would die when the battery (same as the 240) was no longer available, I was very upset. After two years searching I managed to find a new one for sale in Holland (I’m in Scotland) and managed to buy it. I alternate them once every six months, though I don’t know if that will help both survive for the next decade.

these are 7.2V / 2470mAh / 17.78 Wh

I am suspicious of all claims of capacity beyond what the original OEM spec defined. While it's possible to build a replacement battery of greater capacity, my consistent experience with these Brand X replacements is that they either don't live up to their claimed capacity and/or have early failure. Certainly hope this isn't the case here.
