The Mandler 35mm f2

What was the field of view like before it broke? I've seen some people say it's more like 45mm or even 50mm than it is 35mm. Kinda defeats the point if it's basically a 50mm viewfinder!
I have that LLL WEISU. It is tiny, very bright and clear, BUT has very poor eye relief. Its view is close to 35mm only if you don't wear glasses and push your eye very near to it. Or else it is more like 45mm or 50mm.

Leitz SBLOO gives a big and clear view, but it's kinda huge sitting on top of a Barnack camera. Personally I found the VC and the Acall one excellent, not so huge and offer bright and undistorted view. The Acall VF even has parallax offset. (I know Leica purists may not be interested and that's ok.)

Life is trying to stop me trying this lens. I was planning to take it out this afternoon but I slipped on some mud doing the market and now I’m sitting in the hospital waiting for them to take some photos instead. Nothing serious I hope, just very swollen ankle, but better to have it checked.

Better to slip with the shopping than with the Leica/Mandler.

Get well soon, hope it’s as minor as possible. Look after yourself.

Thanks, but no testing the Mandler for a while. After two sessions of xray and one of MRI I was sent home with crutches and my leg in plaster. Apparently it was a double fracture. Totally off topic but the French health service is amazing and I have always had great service. Time to start doing all those CLAs I never got round to.

Oh no! Wish you a speedy recovery!

I have received the chrome ltm version of Mandler 35mm lens last night, just 4 days after placing the order. The lens is well built and quite a bit heavier than my black v4 35mm Summicron. Can't wait to test shoot half a roll of double-x with this lens today.

Below are two random test shots at Little India. I found this lens pretty sharp and can focus accurately on my M4. Quite happy with it.

Gosh, rest well and recover soon. ❤️

Received mine today (black aluminum LTM), after ordering at the March 26 order window. Comparing my "shingle wall" test shots with the Canon LTM 35/2.0, it is much better than that lens. The Canon has dramatically low contrast at 2.0, and takes more stops to get sharp in the corners. Even the Mandler takes to f/8 to get sharp in the corners. Did some OOF background tests, and didn't get anything particularly busy even at f/2.0. But it does get quite smooth at f/5.6 and f/8.

Mine is the LTM version, but it lines up perfectly on their adapter, could certainly use it with the rectangular hood. Well, that depends on how hard it's torqued into the M-mount adapter.

Serial 392 out of 500. They are a good way through their full production run.

Only place engraved "PROTOTYPE" is the M-mount adapter.

One observation of caution: the rear element protrudes beyond the rear of the lens mount, either with or with the M-mount adapter. Don't set it down on that end without the rear lens cap!

Thanks a bunch for your observations! This is the kind of comparison I was looking for. I was wondering whether the Mandler would be sharper than the vintage Canon LTM f2 or f2.8 35 lenses in the center, but would need even more stopping down to have sharpness extend to the edges. From your test it sounds like the Mandler is simply sharper all around, which sounds good.

I was quite nervous when I took this shot, hence the nervous bokeh 🤣

Leica MP/Ltm Mandler 35mm f2 lens, wide-open. Kodak double-X in HC-110B.
Background is too near and not enough contrast. The out-of focus is bound to look good. The 35/2 v4 is very sharp in the centre like this too.

Wide-open, no nervous bokeh 😊

Again, background is too low contrast.

The out of focus is highly dependent on the subject with all lenses, like 50mm Summilux ASPH - first short walk in the park to test

I recently received my chrome brass Mandler 35/2 in LTM. As with many other LTM lenses I've owned, this one sits with its focusing tick mark at about 1 o'clock rather than 12. I purchased the round shade with the lens, but plan to send it back as the mechanism to retract the mounting tabs binds. I also found the round shade interferes with the visibility of the focusing image on my iiif and I would like to try the rectangular shade as a consequence. Is it possible to adjust the resting position by loosening the screws of the mount?

My Light Lens Lab ELCAN in LTM stops at top dead center, incidentally.

I got mine! Beautiful lens, LTM. Lovely colors slightly cool.

However I got the non brass hood and it is so loose I can move it 1-2 mm on the lens when installed. I emailed them and they said this is normal. Yeah?? Is that true?
