W/NW what are you reading right now?

David Deutsch. The Fabric of Reality. He gives a good account of the many worlds quantum theory and he digs deep in every chapter. There are chapters on physics, evolution and mathematics. I haven’t read the maths chapters yet. He gives a guide of how to read the book selectively. That’s uncommon. He is a great champion of Karl Popper, still underestimated in his view. Common sense comes in for a drubbing. An approachable and absorbing book. First out in 1997.

I don´t know how often I have read Rendezvous with Rama and it gets me every time! (Imagine a movie by Kubrick!)
I'm new to Clarke; I have repeatedly tried to get into Sci-Fi fiction from the genre's heyday, and I generally bounce off it. For example, I read Greg Bear's Eon and generally disliked the way it was written and the characters. I am liking Clarke more so. His writing style is simpler, and, I think, sticks closer to what he's good at.

I have just finished "The Great Transformation" by Stanciu. One of the two best books I've read in a decade (the other one being "The Psychology Of Totalitarianism" by DeSmet. These two books kind of bookend a discussion of the roots of our current social, cultural, and spiritual malaise in the West, even in the face of tremendous comfort, ease, and entertainment. Both highly, highly recommended.

I started reading SF in 1979 (the same year I was occupied/enslaved by photography) when a cousin forgot his example of Dune after a visit. Before I sent it to him I started reading it and the rest is history (little pun intended).

Dune and Dune Messiah are definitely exceptions to my general difficulties with Sci-fi. 🙂 Brilliant books. I'm looking to read Dune again this year, probably out loud to my wife (which I can experience in a new way as well).
