Canon 50mm f:1.8 on Bessa R

So, I bought one from Frank S. and it arrived Saturday, all the way from Ontario, Canada to Bisbee, Arizona, and in just one week.

At first I thought Frank S. had run a game on me as I couldn't get the focus ring to move. Duh. Closer inspection revealed you had to push a little button to unlock it. Shades of Kiev 4 and Contax. I had forgotten.

I am currently running a roll of TriX through it to see if it's any better than my Jupiter 8. Maybe "better" isn't the proper term. Different "signature" might be a better term.

However, what I REALLY like thus far is that the aperture ring moves in the direction of the Bessa meter arrows, unlike the Jupiter 8, which has a mind of its own.

(Hey, Frank, thanks. It's in very good shape. Just wish I had an original Canon lens hood for it).

Is your 50/1.8 a chrome one or one of the newer ones? Mines a old chrome & brass Serenar & is going to outwiegh the Bessa R I have coming, I think. :) No different than on the CL & at least I'll have a meter now :D

The Canon 50/1.8 is a truely wonderful lens. I hope you enjoy the results from yours.

William:

The lens I got from Frank is one of the newer ones, black with a couple of chrome rings, and with a bit of Castrol Syntec 5W40 on the aperture blades to combat rust, which is not the problem down here that it is in the frozen north.

Toting my newly acquired treasure mounted on a Bessa R, I stopped by Landmark Camera in Sierra Vista yesterday to pick up a couple of packets of Kodak fixer, and jokingly said to Harvey, the owner, "Naturally you've got a lens cap for this, right?"

Harvery disappeared into the back room and returned with his trusted box of junk, fished around and found a perfect fit generic lens cap.

"That'll be 3 bucks," he said.

But, when I asked about filters he said, "In your dreams."

Ted (who forgot to ask what size filter)

40mm filters. I think only Canon used them. However there are stepup rings available to 40.5mm or Series VI which work well. A hood is nice, but I've not found it to be as absolutely necessary as for some lenses.

I remember wanting to get filters for mine, but the whole 40mm filter thing threw that out of whack. I guess there are step up filters to fix that problem.

It's a great lens enjoy it. I had it married to my Bessa-R for a long time.
