I'm truly sorry if this is an inappropriate post, but this has turned up on the Leica Reflex and Leica mailing lists, and may interest some of you here.

If you also have a Leica SLR, you will be aware of Doug Herr, Birdman of Sacramento, and really nice guy.

I'd just like to forward the following from the Leica Reflex mailing list.

Doug Herr wrote:

Family emergency, must raise cash.

[R8, DMR, SL's, loads of lenses - all for sale]

All:

Doug is a heck of a nice fellow... mild mannered, always polite,
superbly knowledgeable and a true gentleman. He has been a stalwart
on this list for years. He has taught us all and taught us well.

I do not know the nature of his emergency, nor do I wish to
know. Not my business. But I do know that he would not be selling
his gear unless he was in a real bind... and suddenly, it's all for
sale! This is not right!

I've just sent him some cash (No, I'm not buying anything) via PayPal
(telyt@earthlink.net). Someday, when life is better, perhaps he'll
repay me... perhaps he won't. It matters not.

Doug is one of photographers whose photographic standards I aspire
to. He has been an inspiration to many of us and helped us all. Now
it's our turn to help him.

If you can find it in you, maybe you could send him a little, too.

If you are a PayPal user, you can do it by going to paypal.com, log
on, select the tab that says "send money", and follow the
instructions from there. I recommend tagging it as payment for a
service performed and on the final screen you should check the box
saying that there is no need for him to ship a product. Once again,
it's telyt@earthlink.net.

Thanks.

Doug is a super great guy, great nature photographer and someone you could always turn to if you have a Leica R/SL question.

I do not use Pay-Pal but would like to help Doug. Does anyone have an address to mail a check? Do not put on the open forum, but PM me please.

Thank-you.

paypal donation just sent to Doug

paypal donation just sent to Doug

great guy and I only know him from the internet and a few emails. I would encourage you to "pay-it-forward" as well....if you have the means.
Dan

I believe he has long had both email addresses. I used the telyt email, paid and got a response from Doug within 10 minutes !

Doug's a scholar and a gentleman. An artist like him shouldn't have to lose his tools in an emergency. The cost of a couple rolls of film and processing is worth it to help him out.

My thoughts and prayers are with you Doug!

If you could help Doug Herr

By all means, let's help Doug Herr...

He's been helpful to lot of Leica buffs around the world...Even if you don't use a Leica SLR, a small contribution now, while you're hearing of his undisclosed financial plight, will help a valuable member of the Leica community keep his camera tools for the future...

done; our community is small enough as it is without having to have someone leave it because of money

Keep on keeping on Mr. Herr

I just paid it forward. too. Thanks for the heads up-best feeling I've had all week.

I live in same city as Doug yet we have never met. I hope I get to do so soon.

I sent him a handful of dollars earlier today, he very promptly replied with a nice thank you email.

I do hope that his condition improves.

I've known Doug for a few years from the LUG and other internet forums. He's a very talented shooter and a perfect gentleman, who has always been willing to share his expertise with others.

Something must be really amiss if he is selling his Leica gear and hope his family is fine. I'm sending him something and encourage others to do the same.

Just to repeat Doug's postal address in case PayPal is not possible:

Douglas Herr
PO Box 207
Sacramento, CA 95812
USA

I got an email from him yesterday in which he thanks many at RFF for their generosity and says "the financial side of the crisis is much easier to manage" as a result. I get the sense he is not out of the financial woods yet though.

If you have been thinking about contributing but haven't done so yet there is still an opportunity to use PayPal or to send a check to his PO box. Doug is a wonderful giving guy and I think he still needs help.

I do not know what happened to his reviews.

I do not know Herr personally, but I did send him something to help out and we received a very nice card and note from him today.

Thank you to whoever had the nice idea of starting this thread.
