before i hit ebay i thought i'd ask here if anyone has a 43mm hood for a 50mm lens?

and does anyone know the filter size for the cz 50/1.5 for the contax?
got a hood for it?

The Opton is 40.5.

Heavystar has hoods for both.

I find an Oly s45 hood to work well on the Nikkor.

AFAIK Joe, the 50/1.5 has a 40.5mm thread, same as the 50/2. Here's a link to the same question posted by Rich S (click).

Heavystar all the way for both the Sonnars and Nikkors.

An actual Nikkor hood will run you a pretty penny.

i assume you guys have gone for the vented hoods?
it looks like the original hoods were non vented and some of the heavystar hoods look more like the originals than the vented hoods.

should i go for an original look or the sexy vented look?

Never paid much attention Ray, easily they sell for more than $50 and after my IROOA which I think I got a good deal paying only $70 for, I promised myself to look for options regarding hoods.

I use RF cameras mainly to have a small camera and lens that don't draw attention to themselves. A big hood, vented or not, is okay for scenics but not people photography. That's why I use B+W's tiny rubber collapsible hood built into the front filter.

EDIT: The regular Nikon hood covers about one-quarter or one-fifth of the viewfinder area (I just checked). The Nikon S2 and later later cameras have 1:1 viewfinders. So, if you're a right-eyed shooter or a left-eyed shooter doing verticles, this isn't a big deal, you can open your other eye to see the whole frame. So you don't really need vented.

I just purchased a cheap chinese hood, but it screws only one turn into the lens (probably threads not of the same grade) and it's quite tight. Either very effective or vignetting, will see.
I looked for a genuine hood - nice thing to have it turned on within the everready case - but was beaten at 50x USD...
BTW at the same seller I found a great short 72mm thread hood for my Canon 0.95/50mm... here the collector's price for the genuine hood was >220 USD the last I saw...

IME, the vented hoods sold by heavystar & american eagle, which are modeled on hoods made/sold by Walz, Hoya, etc. in the '50s-60s, are not large enough to draw attention to themselves. In fact, I 1st started using the Walz/Hoya hoods because they were so much smaller & less inconspicuous than the original chrome Zeiss Ikon hoods for the post-WWII 50mm Sonnars (having had to scrounge eBay for the vented originals, I'm very happy that someone is now making modern versions). The original Nikon RF hoods aren't nearly as big as those particular Zeiss Ikon hoods, but the original silver chrome screw-in hood for the chrome 5cm/1.4 Nikkor-S I sold Joe is bigger & shinier (& much harder to find) than the vintage/modern black vented hoods.

The vents themselves, however, may draw the curiosity of photographers unfamiliar w/vents because of their unfamiliarity w/RFs.

My J3 has the 40.5mm thread too and I got a metal hood w/cap from Fedka. It's very well made and works very well. It's not the sexy vented type though.

my new hood for the cz 50/1.5 just arrived by canada post (with never before seen blazing speed) and i could not be more delighted.
it's a perfect fit, looks great and leaves me feeling safer than with nothing on the front of the lens for protection.
i have yet to decide which one for the nikkor 50 but will likely be ordering that one by this weekend.

Naturally I went for the sexy vented 43mm S&W hood from heavystar. I looked around the site for the one that didn't say it was for Nikon or Leica and paid a lot less. Nice hood for sure. By the way, the front of the hood takes a 55mm clip on lens cap. Mine says CANON across it. 😱 🙄 😀

Have you used the Nikkor lens yet joe?
