Canon LTM Series VI hood on 35/1.8?

I just got a nice Canon Serenar marked Series VI hood & 40mm adaptor ring for my 50/1.8. Now my new to me 35/1.8 also has a 40mm ring - does anyone know if this hood will work without vignetting?

as far as I remember the 35/1.8 looks similar to the 35/2 (retracted front element, etc).

The 35/2 would vignette with anything, including a standard filter only. The only exception was
a 40-43mm step-up ring ...

I will check when I get home but the 50/1.5 hood is marked as also being the correct hood for some of the more modest 35's. If memory serves me correctly, the 35/3.2 and possibly the 2.8 is metioned. I would suspect therefore that it should be OK certainly at the more moderate apertures.

It costs nothing to try ;) I would take a series of shots at different apertures against a light, evenly lit surface and check the negs.

If it is the rectangular 50/1.8 hood, it will work perfectly on the 35/1.8. I do it all the time.

I've never tried the round 50/1.8 hood on the 35/1.8, but it is also marked for the 35/2.8, so it probably does work on the 35/1.8. But all the round 50mm hoods are such viewfinder hogs that I never use them.
 
What a coincidence! I just got the rectangular Series VI hood (good ol' RFF classifieds) and tried it on my 50/1.8 and 35/1.8. I haven't taken any pictures with it yet, but I looked through the back of my Canon 7 with each lens on. I saw the edges of the hood when it was mounted on the 35/1.8. Hard to tell how significant it would be in an image.

Roland, thanks for the idea of a step-up ring. I could even see the edges of my UV filter on the 35/1.8.

Note that the rectangular 50/1.9 hood is a good bit smaller than the 50/1.8 version. I've never bought one (don't have the lens), so no idea what other lenses it works on.

Aha! Maybe that's why some reports differ here. I indeed have the version for the 50/1.9 (though my lens is the 50/1.8). Text, on top of the hood:

Canon [logo]
Series VI
f: 1.9 50mm
f: 3.5 35mm

It's about 60mm wide, 50mm high, and protrudes a maximum of about 32mm from the front edge of the adapter ring. It's a curious shape, aiming slightly downward, as if it were designed for a tilt-and-shift lens!

I found in my collection of "stuff" a wide angle hood from heavystar. It's a 40.5 ring (I think I bought it for a J-12. That was really silly :) ) and found a 40->40.5 adaptor on ebay. I'll give this a try - I doubt that this lens actually needs a hood, but I'll be happier if I can rig one up "just in case" ;)

I have the 35/2 - I tried the HeavyStar 40.5 step-up ring and a couple of different lens shades and they all vignette on the Canon.

I don't even bother anymore - flare doesn't seem to be a major issue.
 
Hmm. Good to hear that. Even better that the step up ring was cheap so that if my experiance is the same, well, at least I'm not out much :D

As with your experiance, I doubt that flare would be a problem on this lens, but after flaring the bejeepers out of my Canon 85/2 (indoors!) over the weekend, I kinda got into a "must have hood for all lenses" kind of mode.
