Comparing 35mm Lenses: Would you be interested?

Here is the Summilux at 1.4 with the lights on:

For comparison purposes, here is a shot taken with the Ultron at 1.7.
This should be sufficient for tonight. Soon we will have a complete set of images posted at a website.

Do you see any differences?

I will be unfair to the 35mm 3,5 Elmar and post an image here for comparison (at 4.0). This lens needs a CLA or it is soold that it is not meant to be used this way.

I did not use any lens hoods for the flare test of all the lenses to capture any resistance to flare if it was present.

Note that the swirling white lines in parts of the images only appear in the photobucket.com uploaded images, which I will not use in the "official" postings of results.

Hi Raid,
In addition to having the info with the lenses in one place, I think it would be great to post some images with no information, and let us select which one we like the best. (For the serious folks, I know it won't prove anything blah blah blah.) I just think it would be entertaining.

Hi Mike,

I could post a few shots here without any labeling until Roland can put together a presentation of some sort.

I have here an "entertainment" puzzle for you; there are five images, all taken at f 4.0. Can you guess which lenses matches with which image?

Lenses in no particular order:

Canon 35mm 1.5
Canon 35mm 1.8
Canon 35mm 2.0
Canon 35mm 2.8
Canon 35mm 3.5.

Mike has asked fror such a puzzle.

I placed a video container for resolution/sharpness test so that you can see which lens shows the writing on the box the best. When clicking on the PN link and seeing the five small frames, click on any particular frame first. Then you can use the option "larger" to see a larger image on the screen.

The same link now also has images @ f 4.0 taken with five Leica lenses, labeled Leica 1 through Leica 5.

In no partiuclar order:

Elmar 35mm/3.5
Summicron first version (8 elements) 35mm/ 2.0
Summaron 35mm/2.8
Summicron 35mm/2.0 Version 3
Summaron 35mm/3.5

Guess which is which.

Ugh, that's tough. Here are my guesses:

Canon 35mm 1.5 #2
Canon 35mm 1.8 #3
Canon 35mm 2.0 #1
Canon 35mm 2.8 #5
Canon 35mm 3.5. #4

If I get any right I'd be happy......
Thanks Raid!

Mike,
There was no need to type the long image numbers. When you point the mouse to an image,a number will appear (1 to 5).

Raid, this test is a tough challenge, but here are my guesses.

#1 is the 35/2.8
#2 is the 35/2
#3 is the 35/3.5
#4 is the 35/1.5
#5 is the 35/1.8

I hope that I did not embarrass myself too badly. I would be happy with 2 out of 5 correct. I don't have a 35/2.8 so that was assigned by default. Guesses based mostly on sharpness and flare. Actually, pics are not greatly different in my opinion at f4, although contrast levels vary somewhat between several of the lenses. Not too bad for products of the 1950s

My bad, just made the changes.

To my eyes the Ultron is slightly sharper than the Summilux, centre and corner with this giving an apparently slightly higher contrast. OoF I prefer the Ultron in this comparison IMO

I have just received Mike's CV 35mm/1.2 lens. Thank you, Mike.

The few posted images are just here to wet your appetite. Note that I only posted images taken @ 4.0. Results can differ at wider apertures.

Raid-
I like what you are doing, particularly testing with flare in mind. I'm looking forward to the results!
At the risk of creating chaos, could you include some similar but different lenses for comparison's sake? Coming immediately to mind are maybe a common SLR 35mm lens or two, and maybe a medium format equivalent?
If I recall, you have a Fuji 6x9 camera with a 90mm lens, or a 40mm equivalent perspective.
Highlighting these similar but different routes to a similar perspective could be very instructive.

Hi Bryce,

It is not possible for me to now add photos taken by SLR cameras or the Fujica 6x9 rangefinder camera since I have taken down the set-up for the flare test, and I have never done any lens testing of SLR lenses.

So far, we have the following guesses:

#1 #5 is the 35/2.8
#2 #1 is the 35/2
#3 #4 is the 35/3.5
#4 #2 is the 35/1.5
#5 #3 is the 35/1.8

Note that not a single guess from one person agrees with the guesses of the other person.

The Elmar is image # 4. This one is correct.
edited: Nr. 3 and Nr. 5 are also right.

Solution for the puzzle:

#1 is the 35/1.5
#2 is the 35/3.5
#3 is the 35/1.8
#4 is the 35/2.0
#5 is the 35/2.8

It seems that the vintage Canon lenses are resistant to flare.
At least at 4.0 it is difficult to figure out which lens was used here.

As for the Leica lenses, the correct order was as follows:

#1 Summicron Version 1
#2 Summicron Version 3
#3 Summaron 3.5
$4 Elmar
#5 Summaron 2.8

The old Elmar stands out by being prone to flare. It could also be that this particular lens needs to be cleaned. Again, at f 4.0 it is difficult to find differences between such excellent lenses. Roger got three out of five correct, with the only error being not to distinguish between versions 1 and 3 for the Summicrons.
