I have a question about my 3.5cm 1.8 lens ~

Hi? I'm a Nikon S2 user in South Korea.

I have Nikkor 2005 Nikkor 3.5cm 1.8 but there is something strange thing

on my lens.

As you can see attached photo, one of the rear lens part looks little tilted,

Is this normal position of this part??

I spend much time for this problem in korean rangefinder web,
but Nikon RF camera is not common RF system in korea : (

If you have 3.5cm 1.8, Can you check it for me?

The rear mount is tilted on your lens! Never seen that before. Did you buy the camera from a dealer? I would take it back and ask them to check it.
Have you taken any pictures with the lens, particularly wide open. Find a brick wall or smooth surface with some details on it (windows, doors etc) and shoot it wide open. Look at the negative and check that it holds focus across the whole negative area. The 2005 35/1.8 is a very sharp lens, even wide open so any "out of focus" is not acceptable.

Does this part slide? I am thinking that this is the part that engages the camera bodies' focusing helix. If it is, and it does slide, it is okay. There is likely some dirt or foreign object that is making it tilt.

Hmm...I bought it from one of my club member~


I took pictures with this lens about 3 roll, I think images are sharp. (even wide open, see attached almost wide opened shot(F2.0), is it soft??)


And this is important:

rear lens is in good position, it's not tilted. and 3.5cm 1.8 has a movable part on
rear compartment. (I have no idea why this part moves slightly up and down, is it related with blocking unwanted light from a lens between a body?)
when lens dismounted from body, this movable part little tilted one side. this is
the problem. I'm afraid ex-owner had disassembled this lens 🙁

Well if the tilted part is the inner bayonet follower that is normal, or need not be a problem.

The wide angle lenses and long focus lenses employ both the inner and outer mounts. The lens locates on the outer, the focus mechanism locates on the inner, your problem is the focus follower the part that located on the inner mount, is canted when off the camera.

If the lens easily mounts on the camera and easily focuses to infinity and back you need not worry.

When you set the lens and body at infinity and mount the lens and twist to lock the latch, it may be nessary to focus to near and back to infinity to get the focus follower to latch, that is also normal.

Most lenses have two mechanisms to hold the focus follower in place you may be still ok is one is missing.

Alas I dont have your lens (envy), but an owner may confirm all this.

I don't have my 2005 camera here at work but do have my vintage 3.5cm f1.8. It is exactly like yours, when turning the whole lens in my finger 360 degrees,it is obvious that is the way it was designed.

You should see the owners face when I put their precious baseplate in a drill press and drill holes through it! At the moment my S3/SP trigger winder is on hold as i am trying to figure a better (easier to make) drive. It will never be a production item as it does involve cutting baseplate's apart and drilling holes in them. The two i already had made become Christmas presents last year so my S3's are trigger winder less at the moment.
i did check both my 35/1,8's (one old -one new) and the sleeve does skew easily, but without affecting focus coupling.
just loaded up 21 reloadable nikon cassettes with Agfapan 250 movie stock today. This is the last of my stash of Agfapan 250 and I am working on an article for the NHS Journal on theses contraptions.

It must be, Take the lens and look at the second line,where the tilt is suppose to be,It not a matter of tilt but more like the edge of focusing cam is lower in parts and higher in other parts. You have to follow the line while spinning the lens in your hand 360 degrees.

Mine is flush and always has been. I just recently tightened up some loose elements to correct a slight short-focus problem. So it's working fine. The ring in question sits flush all the way around. They may have redesigned something in mid-run. Mine is 355xxx, about the 3,400th lens out an original run of 8,000 lenses.

The focusing collar has an uneven ridge before the top edge(the brassed part on your lens Vince),please note the two images above are showing different parts of the lens!!

If you look inside the mount, what causes it is that large set-screw inside a deep slot. The machining of the edge of the slot affects the tilt.

Now that I stare at it, mine does tilt, very very very slightly. As I said before, this is inconsequential to the lens in use, because the sleeve slides back and forth when put into the focus mount. This spring-loaded movement is actually how the focus helical matches up with the built-in 50mm helical on the mount.

I say stop staring at un-mounted lenses. Put them on a camera and take pictures.
