Have we had a beer thread yet?

At this point we've had threads about food, wine, pipe/tobacco smoking, etc. but I'm not sure if we've discussed beer. So what are your favorite beers? I've only been drinking for about a year and a half (honest!) and usually stick with common imported beers like Guinness or Newcastle. I've never been fond of any of that crap my fellow Americans call beer, though (Budweiser, Miller, Coors). I'm looking to try some new beers, especially imports.

Any suggestions on less common beers? I am close to a BevMo chain as well as a local liquor store with lots of good imported beers. I actually just picked up a few different German beers at BevMo today (a couple ales, and a dark and light hefeweissen), but they're chilling right now and I haven't had time to try them yet.

I'm not sure that we have had a beer-specific thread, but favorite beverages have been a topic from time to time.

My favorite beer of all time is Chimay Cinq Cents, followed by USA ales, e.g., any of the fine products from Sierra Nevada, especially Bigfoot barley wine, or a number of micros from Chicago, Colorado or Oregon. One of my faves used to be Celis brewery from Austin TX, except I have not seen their stuff in local stores in years. I am an ale drinker, and don't especially care for lagers of any style or wheat beers (ales or lagers). Other personal preferences include many Belgian and British ales.

Well, never mind the "drinking group with a camera problem" jokes, but my fave is right here, and practically has my name on it...okay, at least my initials.

Note: this is not the brewery involved in the legal squabble over use and ownership of the Budweiser brand name, something that has been an issue for last 80-plus years (but not the way Anheuser-Busch sees it). Then, too, I'll take a bottle of Bud over a Heineken most days of the week...the latter's too bitter for my taste, thougfh I've been told it's because the stuff doesn't travel all that well.

Obligatory Public Safety Statement: Enjoy Responsibly...especially if there's a camera 'round your neck at the same time. :D

There is a microbrewery in Northern San Diego county California called Stone Brewing. They make a beer called "arrogant b******" and a decent IPA. There may still be a brew pub in Riverside. When I was there they had a few decent beers on tap.

Favorites...

1. Piraate (Hard to find Belgium ale. Duval has the reputation of being "the finest beer in the world" and is a very fine beer but Piraate, "Pirate", is better...)

2. Pilsner Urquell on draft if you can find it. Was disappointed with it though, bottled.

3. Boddingtons Pub Ale, draft

4. Dock Street (New York microbrew, not sure if it's still made...)

5. Anchor Steam

6. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale

A fine beer similar to Piraate, and equally hard to to find, is another Belgian ale called Brigand. Another one of my favorites that I can't find these days. Not quite as tart as a gueze, but close. Great stuff.

We have several microbreweries in VT, with a couple sending product 'down country' I'm rather fond of 'Magic Hat's #9'- and the more local 'Trout RIver Rainbow Red'. Trout River also makes the best pizza in the Northeast Kingdom on Friday & Saturday nights. Word is out- last month we went but they had no dough left at 7pm!

Brigand...

Thanks for the rec., dexdog. If it's as good as Piraate, I will absolutely look for it. Damned forum. First it gives you GAS, then has you jones'n for Belgium ale! LOL.

PS - Oh, it's Anchor Steam not "StReam" - corrected : )

The Heineken I drank back in the '60s in Amsterdam was the best I've ever had. However, the Heineken you get here is very disappointing. Guess I'll stick to my Miller Lite on the rare occassion I drink one anymore.

Bob

I like Heineken draft, much much more drinkable than the bottled. Also loved Moosehead on draft. Some beers just don't survive the bottling process.

I love Belgian ales of all kinds...I guess that is Beer GAS, eh?

I don't drink beer but just occasionally, but it is hard to complain about a classic like Guiness.

I'm even more partial to Sam Adams Cream Stout and Samuel Smith's Oatmeal Stout and Nut Brown Ale., Newcastle Brown Ale, J W Dundee Honey Brown...(are we seeing a trend here?)

Sadly, because I must watch my empty carb intake pretty closely, I more often drink Sam Adams Light, (when I do drink beer on a more regular occasions)...I save the dark chewy stuff like I do mead...only for special celebrations or ritual.

I'll second the Magic Hat #9, that is my current favorite. Some of the others on my list are Old Peculiar, Anchor Steam and Rouge Dead Guy Ale. I was in Seattle a few weeks ago and had some Mac & Jacks South African Amber, sadly not available outside of the pacific northwest.

Cheers!
Alan

My latest favorite is one I would highly recommend to all - Ellie's Brown Ale by Avery out of Colorado - a fantastic American brown that is just as enjoyable in the summer as it is in it's natural winter surroundings.

Cheers!

Wow ... beer, cigarettes ... I hope we're going to have a thread for all the other 'sins' as well!

Some of Oz's best beers come from Tasmania ... Cascade is one that comes to mind. I am not a huge beer fan but on a hot day an ice cold beer is a bit special! :)

Aussies take beer drinking very seriously! :D

I have been enjoying Goose Island Honker's Ale recently. It's from Chicago. Up here in Detroit, we also get a choice of many fine Canadian beers. I prefer ales to lagers in general, but I haven't met too many beers I don't like.

Well, I think I might be spoiled as I think that we on the upper left coast have the best brews in the world. I also enjoy the Chimey and Guiness, etc. but if you ever get a chance to try any of the Deschutes Brewery beers from Bend, OR you'll be in for a real treat! The Black Butte Porter wins awards at pretty much every festival and the Obsidian Stout when they have the cask conditioned stuff at the pub is creamy and wonderful. I'd also recommend the Anderson Valley Red Tail Ale out of CA and a hundred others that might be hard to find except locally. Even such standards as the Sierra Nevada and Anchor Steam pale by comparison, and they're pretty darn good.

Mmmmm....Beer!

I have to give a mention to our local KC brewery, Boulevard Brewing Co. They have a Pale Ale I can drink like water. They also have a very solid wheat beer that I won't refuse either. Perhaps my favorite from them is their Octoberfest, called Bob's 47. It is a treat every fall, especially on draft.

I've had several of the Deschutes brews Steve B mentioned. It is nice stuff, even the porters and stouts of which I am not usually fond.

One of the best events when I still lived in Georgia was a brewfest in Athens one fall. For something like $20 you could sample wares from more than 50 breweries, most of whom had multiple brews. I know there were some good local options, but the only one I recall off-hand 10 years later is the Abita brand out of Louisiana I believe.

Oh, also enjoy Shiner Bock from Spoetzl Brewery in Texas. It a quality beer, but I like to think of it as my 'yard beer'. Dunno why, but it is an easy drinker...

OK, I'm thirsty now! :D
