Have we had a beer thread yet?

Please don't mentiopn Kirin, Asahi or Sapporo. They are part of a conspiracy to make every beer taste the same!

There's a standard pattern. Start importing a premium beer into a country and create a demand for it. Then replace the imported beer with a rebadeged domestic one and watch the profits come in! (There's a good joke about this in The Simpsons). OVer the past 10 years, every "Japanese" beer in Europe or the US has switched to production from Busch or GUinness factories with little resemblance to the real thing. It's happening with countless other beers, too, like Cobra, which used to be a good Indian beer, or San Miguel.

On the bright side, a microbrewery has opened a small pub 100 yards away form my front door and I plan to imbibe a glass of their IPA in the next half hour and wait for that delicious 'click'...

and I second this! Lived in Prague 2 years ago and became acquainted with a guy who worked for Staropramen brewers. We got talking beers and I reminisced about my time in Japan with their sweet, sweet, beverages. He told me I could have as much Asahi as I wanted because his company had started to brew it.....it was not the same :(

Another vote for Alexander Keith's from Nova Scotia.
Those who like it, like it a lot.
Also love my Molson Export, and just love Red Cap in those brown stubby bottles, reminds me of stealin' beers from the old man when I was 16.....

I don't think I've seen anyone mention Fat Tire Ale. This, however, is a good thing, because that stuff really does taste like a tire...

Most of those mentioned here are probably on the more expensive side. What do you guys drink when you want to drink cheap? Tecate and Pabst Blue Ribbon are a staple for my friends and I when we're broke. I drink Lone Star when I'm in Texas (which is pretty awful, but as they say, "When in Rome...").

My favorite beer is Newcastle.

Funny that I was in Hartlepool in the UK a few years back and I asked for a Newcastle from the bartender. He, along with others in our group (I was there for a wedding), looked at me like I was a crazy drunk for ordering it. Seems that Newcastle is considered too strong for the casual drinker...almost like the US version of Mickey's or something. All you UK folks is that true?

All right, way out on a limb.........................Labatt's 50. Sorry. Sooooo bad that it's good. Actually, that's what I drank growing up and I still love it. I'll admit it. Of course I now have to go back home to drink some.

Not generally, a lot of draught or bottled beer (ie not the bog standard stuff) is as strong or stronger. Drink a few "Newkies" and you'll know about it though. :D

preferring plain water over (american) budweiser or heineken ...

had asahi some time. acceptable.
i like hoepfner, tsingtao, murphy's, jever, and til now i never met a wrong taste in beer from moravia or bohemia.

Best beers are belgian ones, no contest. Where are the belgian members???
One of my favorites is the Pécheresse (Sinner or sinful woman); there are also the Kriek, la Gueuze and la Chimay ... etc all are awsome.
Other beers, more common: Hoegaarden, of course. And a French one: the Desperados with Tequila flavor ... ah delightful!!!

Although my favorite East Coast brewery is Victory in PA.

I haven't had the 60, but I have a bottle of the 90 IPA in front of me right now, it's amazing. :)

I'll have to take a trip to Victory.

Anchor Steam is yummy. I'm sure it's amazing on draft. Now I'm hungry. No Dungness crabs to be had. Have to settle for a stinkin ham sandwich. Oh well...

Belgiums are hit or miss, love or hate for me as well. Those I like are my favorite beers in the world. Those I don't like I wouldn't give to my dog to drink. Some are just too sickingly sweet. I don't like fruit in my beer, so the Lambics are out - absolutely hate them. Also not much of a wheat beer drinker. You can keep those too.

High alcohol content - and the good ones are too yummy, make you want to drink s'more. They'll put you on you ass before you know it, give you the worst hangover you ever had. Proceed with caution : )

Guinness man myself, we have a wonderfull little pub here in Fredericksburg, called JBrians Taproom, they have an AMAZING pint!!

Ruddles is another favorite. It seems as if some of the local brewerys here are producing some of the real ale style beers I have only found in the UK. I sure love these beers, some have a real abundant hop flavor.

A good porter is hard to beat as well, St. Peters makes a good one.

I just picked up a few bottles of Samuel Smith's, which claims to be brewed in the oldest brewery in Yorkshire. Has anyone tried it before? The fellow at the store was singing its praises. I got the Nut Brown, the Pale Ale and the Imperial Stout.
