Have we had a beer thread yet?

... in Japan, Asahi Super Dry, Yebisu, Sapporo Classic and No 1: Otaru beer !!! It is from a local micro brewery near Sapporo. This reminds me of the upcoming annual "Sapporo Beer Garden" event from July to August :D The main avenue has a nice park, which will be a big "beer garden" for four weeks !

I thought all american beers were crap too, until I actually visited the country & found that there's more than just Bud & Miller. It's like Americans saying Australian beer is crap if they're opinion is based on our no'1 export, Fosters!
I tried some really nice micro beers in Oregon (can't remember any names, but you guys are spoilt!) & Anchor Steam & Sierra Nevada Pale Ale have already been mentioned as fav cali beers. I like that your micro beers are generally only available state wide, so from state to state you can head to the supermarket & find a new set of beers to choose from. Having travelled a little bit, Coopers Pale Ale is still my fav. On a summer's day I love Hoegaarden or Leffe blonde.

and a couple from Japan which I don't remember.

Do they still make/sell Asahi beer? I haven't seen it for ages.

Yes they do. Asahi, Kirin and Sapporo are the common beer brands that are available almost everywhere in Japan.

2. Pilsner Urquell on draft if you can find it. Was disappointed with it though, bottled.
If you ever visit the Czech Republic, I strongly recommend that you drink it in Pilsen, where it's brewed, it tastes even better there :)

I don't drink much beer, I'm a whisky drinker mostly, but I'm very fond of a pint of Guinness pulled by someone who knows how to do it properly.

My local pub has a very decent microbrewery attached to it:

My fave local Australian Beers -
Tooheys extra dry + extra dry platinum
Hahn Super Dry (cheap too!)
Many of the Coopers stuff

My fave imported beers -
Asahi/kirin
Amstel (when I feel like drinking something that won't weight down my stomach)
kokanee
Much of the German stuff

I find the major american beers like millers/bud etc average. I can drink them, and I still enjoy them (hell, they aren't poison) but I much prefer any of the above.

I'm sorry, I'm not sure I understand what your talking about. What is "Budweiser"?????

... and even though I do not drink Budweiser, it was established in 1876 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budweiser). Gee, that's 131 years! Give me a break.

And even back then the only reason they could establish the brand was a loophole in the trademark/copyright law. Budweiser is a Czech beer that has been brewed since the middleages in the town of Bujovice (=Budweis, it is in the former German part) in the Czech Republic. It is a pity only the brand was copied, not the taste....

However, my preferred brand is Duckstein.

Spoilt for choice here in the UK :)

Current favourite is "Snecklifter" closely followed by "Hobgoblin" in bottled beers, draught would be Thwaites bitter or mild (or a "pint of mixed")

I'm quite partial to a very small microbrewery located about 20 feet away (in my garage). I'm on a first name basis with the brewmaster and he really takes good care of me. I , err, He brews a very nice red ale that just glows, unfortunately, the brewery shuts down for the summer, to allow the brew master time for other pursuits, like photography.

Perhaps one of our home-brewers would do a RFF ale. Something light, with tight grain, yet colorful. Something that scans well. And has good bokeh.

Well, after several pints, anyway.

Kirin was the one I was thinking of but couldn't remember. Thanks. :)

I remember drinking Asahi beer once, and yes, wondering about any connection to Pentax cameras. :) I haven't seen it around here for a while.

Living in Oregon and being a beer lover is just the best! I think all the rain gives us nothing better to do (can't get the gear wet now can we?) than to brew great beer. I been enjoying the Rogue Chipotle Ale as of late, if you have not tried Chipotle beer in the past it is really good. I also enjoy like the Lucky Labrador Brewing company, a brew pub that I can take my dog to. They have a great brew called Dog Day IPA that rocks!

I'm somewhat amazed that the NW States have so many (reportedly) good beers. I certainly don't hear the same thing about British Columbia!

I like British ales: Newcastle Brown, Boddingtons and John Smiths Pub Ale. I also really like McAuslan Cream Ale from Montreal. Keiths is a pretty good IPA. I like it served quite cold. The Keiths television ads are terrible though.

Sapporo is still being made? I remember that being imported into the UK, and being available through the "Victoria Wine" chainstores. The lid of the can peeled back.

Hoegaarden is a very good beer and whenever I can find it on tap I order a pint.

Lots of good selections in here, some I've only had once or twice, some I've never even heard of. I need to seek some of these out. In a few hours I will crack open one of the German beers I picked up from BevMo.

Please don't mentiopn Kirin, Asahi or Sapporo. They are part of a conspiracy to make every beer taste the same!

There's a standard pattern. Start importing a premium beer into a country and create a demand for it. Then replace the imported beer with a rebadeged domestic one and watch the profits come in! (There's a good joke about this in The Simpsons). OVer the past 10 years, every "Japanese" beer in Europe or the US has switched to production from Busch or GUinness factories with little resemblance to the real thing. It's happening with countless other beers, too, like Cobra, which used to be a good Indian beer, or San Miguel.

On the bright side, a microbrewery has opened a small pub 100 yards away form my front door and I plan to imbibe a glass of their IPA in the next half hour and wait for that delicious 'click'...

Here in Japan we have many lager type beers like Asahi, Kirin and Suntory. But Yebisu is probably the best of those. Imported beers are rather expensive. For a pint would be around $8-10 for Guinnes or Killkenny's. Some years ago you could only get bottled Guinness in pubs, now draft, and even cans in the supermarkets!!

Nick mentioned Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, and i was genuinely surprised when i downed a few. I had always imagined American beers to be light.
And i see that Newcastle Brown Ale is liked by quite a few here. I'm very happy, as i'm a Geordie born and bred!!!!! :)

Another vote for Japanese beer ... served in an ice-encrusted daijoki on a humid night. :p
