0.85 Finder Folks - Input ?

As a guy who's got an M3 and an M6; and gets tempted by a number of you folks here 😀 into getting OTHER M models; I'm curious what the 0.85 viewfinder is like.

I know I like my M3 finder and the M6 finder is "ok" - but does the 0.85 finder give me any more "bang" for my buck than the M6? Will it be a lot more similar to my M3 in terms of "look and feel"?

Dave, my M6 has the .85 finder. It is great for 50mm (my favourite) and will do with 35mm but I have to move my eye around as I wear glasses and can't get close enough to see the 35 framelines without doing so. The M2 with .72 (?) magnification is perfect for 35mm for me. The M3 with a 50mm lens cannot be beat, but the M6 with .85 finder comes very close.

(I'd go for that M5 if I were you.)

I find myself not requiring the 28mm framelines because I don't a) have a 28mm lens and b) I prefer to use my 21mm instead 😀

I'm being pulled by a different beast with an 0.85 finder so I think the M5 will be passed. I had never considered it in my "grand scheme" (but then again, I hadn't considered the M3 either) 😀

Dave--the .85 finder is NOT that significally different than the .72. In fact if you put, say, a 50mm on the two cameras (I'm speaking of M6s) and look thru them side-by-side--there's barely any perceptible difference in the finders. I think the .85 is supposed to hold an edge with the Noctilux and the 75mm 1.4 Summilux. Good luck!

I have both an M3 & a M6 TTL 0.85. The only "bang for the buck" VF-wise that the M6 gives you is a slightly brighter VF on account of the lack of the M3's slight blue tint. Yes, you do get a 35mm frame, but is so far out to the edges (I wear glasses) that's it's not much of an improvement over using the M3's entire VF. What you lose is the slightly higher magnification, flare (I had my M6 "upgraded" w/the late-M7/MP flare-fix kit by DAG & it helped a great deal), & more inaccurate framelines (@ infinity). It will be closer in look & feel to the M3 than the lower mag. M VFs.

Dave, if you fit the 1.25 Okular you'll have your .85 and more. Highly recommended. Eat your cake and have it. 🙂

I agree with FrankS. The reason I bought an M2 was that I found I couldn't compose properly with a 35mm lens on my 0.85 M6TTL. I'm actually toying with selling my M6TTL because I like my M2 so much more.

(Just a quick aside if anyone can help. My M2 is I'd say about "1 to 2 stops" dimmer than my M6. Sort of like the difference between, not having and having sunglasses on. Does anyone think this is normal. Feel free to send me me a PM if you like.)

Just checked my M2 and M6. The difference to my eye is more like 1/2 to 1 stop. Noticeable, but just. Not nearly as dramatic as wearing/not wearing sunglasses.

Thanks alot FrankS. Its not bothering me really, certainly not enough to warrent a trip to the cleaners. (Maybe the sunglasses analogy was a bit over the top).

I'm going to respectfully disagree with the above statement. I have found my Noctilux and 75/1.4 significantly easier to focus accurately wide open with an 0.85 M6. If you like fast 50's then the extra magnification is great.

Me too. I love the 0.85 mag for anything >=50mm. I have a 50 Summilux and that lens is a snap to focus, easier than my 0.72 without question. I use a 50, 90 and 135 with the 0.85 and anything <=35mm on the 0.72. I'm a happy lad! 🙂
