I see no problem there. I bet they expect to sell relatively large quantities, and I wouldn't wonder if at least parts were made by Cosina (remember Fuji and Voigtländer/Cosina's cooperation regarding their analog 6x7 rangefinder).
And their plan for 2012 includes a wide-angle version and one with a 50mm lens so that most customers will buy 2 or 3 of their cameras.
And they'll sell the design to Cosina so they can build a version with M-mount. 🙂

The issue with the M6 is as with any film camera today. The "anguish" about it is more practical and personal, nothing as prosaic as cost.
A camera like the x100 (with a few tweaks) could be the perfect camera for my needs. I think many people have come to the same conclusion.

What kills me is that I think $1000 is cheap for this camera, when others think the price is crazy. I just can't see how it could be priced lower...

I'm thinking more like Fuji wanted to make a quality high-end compact digital camera and sell it in enormous quantity to make money 🙂

I think it is cheap too. What is the cheapest camera in the category, the DP2 at $800 (when released)? Add the cost of a (theoretical) VF/EVF and an extra stop on the lens to match the Fuji and you'd easily be >$1k. Not to mention the price of the X1.
But I think the OP is asking how much it actually costs them to produce it? I have no idea 🙂

My wild guess would be about 50% of the end price. Would be interesting to hear what guys with experience in marketing think, though.

What do you think is better: selling 10.000 items for US$1000,- each or 100.000 items for US$500,- each? 😉

There is the psychological portion of this as well. For $1K we expect a first class, well built camera by a great company. For $500 we expect a quick camera built pretty well, but not serious. How many photographers price their work high mostly because pricing lower indicates a lesser perceived value by the shopper? It's not an inconsequential consideration. It may even sound counter intuitive, but the Lexus, once upon a time, was identical to the Camry in nearly every aspect; the luxury buyer would buy a Lexus where he wouldn't think of buying a Camry.

after spending 25 yeaars in the consumer electronics industry i can tell you the 1000 retail dealer cost will be 825 or so
fujis cost including marketing efforts etc if it sells at the qty projected to come up with this cost by thee bean counters will likely be about 650 allowing them some promotion room for rebates etc
no idea what the projected qtys would be though
but assume similar targets for sales as a mid level slr so more than 10000 world wide

maybe fuji guys think $500 today money will be worth $1,000 march 2011? heh.. many things could happen in 6 months
