I recently came across 120processing.com Their scans are a bit on the small side (1500x1500) but if they are of good quality, they could serve for everyday use and as proofs for images to be scanned at higher resolution.

Anybody tried them out yet? I just sent them a roll of Acros to test out: $12 includes B/W developing, low-res scans on CD, and free shipping both ways (in the USA). judging from the website, it looks like they cater to the Holga crowd, and at the risk of being called a snob, I'll admit the association with plastic lens fetishists has me a bit worried about the quality of the scans that I will receive.

So far the best deal for my needs (2000x2000 scans) is NCPS, where they charge $5.50 for developing the film and another $5.50 for the "budget scans" + S&H. Any other options (Precision charges an arm and a leg for BW)?

I've moved and don't have my darkroom set up yet, so I have been looking for a 120 service too--that's actually why I signed up for the forum, so thanks for posting this one. In re: the concern about the lomo aesthetic, it looks like the reviewer has some toy camera images but also some more classic black and white photography. Please let us know how your test roll comes out. I'd be happy to find a well-priced lab to support.

OK, just received the scans from the first test roll I sent to 120processing.com. The disc arrived after one week from my sending in the roll (I live in PA and the are based in NH).

These are 1500x1500 scans (approx. 5"x5") of Acros 100 and they look pretty good, especially if you consider they cost was $9 including shipping both ways.

Some random dust spot, but not bad, maybe one or two per picture, and some scans included a little of of the frame around the image (see example below). Overall however, the tones look pretty good.

Hope they start offering 2500 or 3000 pixel scans soon. I'll definitely be going back, especially for BW.

Also, film came sleeved and cut in 3 frame strips, as I specified on the order form. Finally, a nice touch... the package included a hand-written note from the person who processed the roll 🙂

This one seems to have lost some of the white detail that's on the negative (white pants right leg), but overall not too far off...the neg is pretty dense in that spot.

All in all, recommended for fast and good service at honest prices.

so, seems like my requests was answer before I formulated it... went to 120processing.com today and saw that they added high resolution (3000pixel) scans BUT the price was really high ($25 +$9 developing) ...ouch!

Unless they come up with options between the $3 scans and the $25 I'll continue to use the great folks at Precision for anything that needs to be scanned higher than 1500x1500.

Just got a few rolls back from 120processing and it worked like a charm.
If you sent multiple rolls at once Dwayne's might be a bit cheaper.

I use precision camera for all scanning and slide and color film development. 11.99 is really good considering you get scans in the 4k x 4k region. Since B&W is about $8 more expensive, I develop those on my own and then ship the film sleeved and they scan it for 11.99

Update.

Last batch scans from 120processing was not as good as previous results. Lots of dust and one frame included the edge of the frame (showing the film info). Worst of all, the scans were all over the place in terms of exposure.

The one good news is that they are now sending TIFFs together with the JPGS (still at 1500x1500).

I think they have become more succesful and popular of late and they are having a harder time to cope with demand. Did not get a hand-written note this time 🙁 together with my negatives.

The originals you posted look like they have poor tonal range IMO. The second example in particular looks to have some unnecessarily abrupt transitions from the 3/4 to highlight areas.

FWIW, I find that 120 budget scans are about the same quality as I get from the Epson V700. I just send out for drum scans on special images.

Best scanning/developing luck has still been with North Coast Photo. I save up rolls until I have enough to justify sending one small Priority Mail box for $5 to save on shipping to them.

Precision negatives came back cut in different ways than I requested (all the negative rolls uncut), a roll of slide film had a horizontal scratch across the roll and scans were somewhat dirty. Definitely unimpressed, and I don't think their scanning deal comes back any cheaper than North Coast's basic scans.

I had the hand-written note, but lots of dust on my scans.

The price is good and the turnaround was excellent, but the quality left something to be desired. It was more the lack of consistency that got me. Of 8 rolls sent, 5 were very good, 2 had issues, and 1 was a dusty, scratched mess.

It may be best to do your own B&W developing, and then mail the roll to Precision Camera. They work is very clean and their rates are excellent too.
