16-year kid shames me and probably you too

About 50% of the shots on page 1 and 2 were "swoopy-banged kid sitting in weeds". I usually enjoy variety, but that's just me.

Or until some wife or girlfriend smash his car with a TLR in the middle of the night......he's good for his age though. PS or not he is an artist.

Are you kidding? They are not amazing young photographers, just cute chicks with cameras that show some skin on flickr.

Seriously?

Nirrimi was just recently flown out from Australia by Diesel Clothing to New York for a week or two to shoot their new "be stupid" advertising campaign:

I personally think it's a great campaign and the shots are great. Not only that, she originally got exposed through the QANTAS young artist awards - I think she won. It's a national comp and pretty big.

Some of the images influences are clearly on display and there are quite a few PS tricks on show...but who isn't guilty of playing with a few photo tricks from time to time?

Anyone who is that sort of age should simply be encouraged.

...and anyone my sort of age should not get jealous;)

It's one thing to look at another photographer's work and state "they are really good". When they are this young, they should be encouraged to keep up the good work.

another to announce that they put you to shame. If that is tha case, you need to evaluate the work that you are doing, and if you are in a rut. You become your own worst critic, which means the only person really unhappy with your work is "you".

As far as announcing that these teenagers have no talent- jealosy of them being so young and being this good.

Not a fan of post processed PS stuff - the "vintage" look bores me and has from the first time I came across it some 3-4 years ago - I see it a lot from some wedding photographers.

That said, I'm not going to bash a 16 yr old for picking up a camera and playing - expressing themselves in what ever way they feel (as long as they're not harming themselves in the process). Some kids write, some play an instrument, some paint and some take photographs.

The hope is, they continue, grow, and blossom into what (and who) they were meant to be. :)

Cheers,
Dave

Dear Brian,

I second every word of that -- though I have to agree that personally, I find the young man's photography more interesting than the young women's, possibly because I like his captions.

I'm also a bit puzzled about the 'obvious Photoshop tricks' comments made by several. If they succeed as pictures (or as captioned pictures), what of it? To me, the quality of the photography stands out a good deal more than the post-processing. Clearly I'm looking at the wrong things!

Cheers,

R.

I must admit I was never overwhelmed by the post processing ... I must have missed something. Not a lot of the photos were hugely original IMO but they certainly weren't cliches either.

I can see quite clearly why Frank in particular thinks so highly of his work!

Agreed!

As with a lot of stuff I see in the popular style it looks a little canned. There's no denying the kid has an eye and the wherewithal to put his ideas into images which is the part of all this that's encouraging.

Honestly, I've become bored very quickly with every single one of the links provided so far...

Nirrimi / Diesel Clothing / New York ...still found the work unimpressive

Looking at your flickr I can see why. Your style and taste is absolutely different from the young guns.

Nice work by the way.

I recognize this style as commonly used in ads targeted to youth. Around globe companies roll out campaigns to look like they know youth, like they care for them. But they don't.

Companies care for income, for money youth (and their parents) are going to spend for casual wear which suddenly costs like it's imported from outer space. What companies care for is to turn youth thinking that wearing certain wear is trendy, that they become cooler and smarter that way. This is true perversion not when elder man sits by the kids' playground with camera over shoulder.

What's interesting - companies fool youth by campaigns created by youth themselves. They hire kids to help them fool more kids. That would be truly amazing if that wouldn't be evil!

I hate to sound like an ass, but...

Not bad, but not great. A bunch of head and shoulders portraits with canned-looking photoshop actions. As patrickjames said, standard looking flickr fair. Though, certainly a cut above the P&S party shots. He's got a decent eye and if he sticks with it, might be really good.

I do tire of all the PS actions for different looks. It really annoys me when people use 5 different looks from what is clearly the same shoot. B&W, check. 'Vintage' colors, check. Cross processed, check...

I will say this though: 16 yr old with a 5DII? WTF mate?

I totally agree. Standard and over processed.

Makes me more appreciative of learning photography on my parents' Pentax K1000 and 50mm.

+1

I have a deep love for advertising. It is so twisted & ridiculous that I find it sexy. I wonder if it is a named condition. Madison avenue syndrome perhaps.

I've seen the naked/half naked girl in the woods/forest/field/abandoned whatever photo a hundred times. You get there the right time of day and you can't take a bad photo. It's good light, a Photoshop action and some understanding of how a camera works.

They're good pictures. But they won't set anyone apart from a crowd.

As long as he's having fun, enjoying himself and likes the results he's getting -- good for him. Some good stuff in there. Not the kind of thing I'd photograph or indeed style but kudos to him all the same. Although not my style, if I got results like that when I was 16 I'd be pretty darn happy with myself.
