1948 Elmar 90mm F4 - First Pics - Post Yours

Gabriel, great, couldn't be better. Of course, a great model helps, too.

John, did you look at that APUG thread? I use a plastic reel and tank some people say they encourage uneven development. And I have had it a couple of times with Rodinal, but never when I used 4 minutes between cycles; good luck

Yes, I read it...I just switched to metal reels actually. Rodinal 1:50 has always been perfect for me agitating every minute in terms of evenness (though highlights sometimes burned a bit), but when I tried 1:100 stand recently, I got heavily burned edges, and now this afternoon I got somewhat burned edges. Just one edge, presumably the bottom. And I was actually letting it go for only 3 minutes between agitations!

However, it could be that I let the temperature get up to 70 or 71 degrees...anyway, Rodinal usually works fine for me and I'm sure it will continue to do so.
 
CharJohn, thank you for those details. I can't seem to find Rodinal in NY, but I'll look into getting some shipped. John, without my 'model' I'd be taking a lot more pictures of cameras sitting on desks! I shot a couple frames with the Elmar this weekend - they're in the scanning queue now...

Amen brother, luckily I have three granddaughters, they are the only ones that will act like models for me. And how better to use a 90mm Elmar.
 
John, 3 granddaughters sounds great - triple the Elmar possibilities.

Continuing to love everything this lens does...

I picked up a pretty nice 90/4 Elmar about a year ago from someone here on RFF, after buying my first screw mount Leica, but unfortunately I haven't used it much--mainly because I didn't have an external viewfinder for it. Plus, 90mm has always been a tough focal length for me to wrap my brain around anyway. But lately I have been interested in shooting more portraits, and this thread has motivated me to finally get myself a viewfinder, which I did last week. My VIOOH should be waiting for me on my doorstep when I get home!

Last summer, for the fun of it I took some shots with the Elmar despite not having the viewfinder for it, knowing full well that guessing at 90mm frame lines on a iiic without a viewfinder is next to impossible (well, for me, at least). Suffice to say, my results were quite comical!

I'll post some samples once I get the VIOOH.
 
The VIOOH at 90 is not very comfortable for me but it works. Just remember the parallax setting. Or rather, make sure to leave it at infinity and train yourself to aim slightly high. For me, that works better than fiddling with one more setting for every shot.

Thanks for the tip! Good to know. I admit I'm not expecting a whole lot from the VIOOH other than to at least be able to get some use out of the 90/4. I also am fortunate to have pretty good eyesight and don't wear glasses, which I imagine would complicate matters tenfold.
 
The Elmar is a pretty nice lens. And you can still get them really cheap (payed 20 Euro for mine on eBay; brassed barrel but perfect glas). Pretty much undervalued.

I do (wear glasses, that is) but that's not much of a problem, except at the full 35mm view. It's the "tunnel vision" at the longer FL settings that gets tiresome after a while. For the price though, there's nothing wrong with it. (Full disclosure, mine is not the Leitz original but a Walz branded Japanese copy that was $20 if memory serves.)
 
I prefer the VIDOM myself; I find the image a little clearer because of one less prism, but you get the left/right inversion.
Then again, my VIOOH was classed UGLY at KEH.

The 90mm view through them isn't too bad. It's the absolutely tiny 135mm and too wide 35mm view that are the worst.
