$2000 Lens Shade - the joys of collecting

This is sorta a stupid question, but I can't help myself - is this $12,000 Nikon 21mm an especially good lens, just rare or both?

If anyone here is outbid in their pursuit of the five-figure Nikon lens, I would be willing to part with my less-rare, but almost really nice Voigtlander 21/4 for just $5,000. Sources tell me it was one of only a few dozen made on some particular day several years ago. (I think it was a Wednesday - very desirable.)

I will also throw in a Voigtlander lens shade that I personally value at $2,000.

The shade went for $2600. At least this is a very rare accessory, so it has a real value in the eyes of the die-hard collectors.

I think the picture for the Canon shade is incorrect, as the 400/2.8L uses a large white tube (to put it nicely) and not a black piece of plastic. Regardless, that hood still costs more than 10% of the entire lens!

in this NHS write up, Bob Rotoloni says that 500 or more 21/4 Nikkors were made for the rf camera.

Yes folks, this is a Nikon RF mount meant to be used on the Screw mount Version of the famed W-NIKKOR 3.5 cm f1.8

This is as rare as Hen's teeth, priced accordingly @ 105,000 yen(about US $850.00).
I know a couple of people around here have the screw mount version and I thought they may want to see the hood😉

After reading all these posts about how this thingy sold for $5,000.00. and that doo-dad went for only $2450.00 I fall down on my knees and thank God that I'm only a user and not a collector.
And if I really wanted one, I could go to the machine shop down the block and they'd turn me a knock-off 21 f4 shade or 50 1.1 shade for a fraction of what the real thing cost, and no one who ever looked at my photos would know or care.

and likes to have the original hood,hey what's another $1000???

Who on the PLANET would have another kit like that??

It's easy to be smug if you had the foresight to get in on the ground floor, as it were. But I'm still a little unclear on the concept.
Is this about collecting and possessing rare things, or is it merely about investing to make money, because some of the comments lead me to believe its about the latter, rather than the former.
And yes, while we are all Capitalists and believe there is nothing wrong with making money, nevertheless, there is something that bothers me about this exercise being just about money, which in some cases I believe it to be.
Forgive me if I appear to be naive, or worse a cynic, but those are my feelings.

i did try a 21/4 Nikkor in Rf mount years ago. Nice enough lens, but at the time I was using a 21f3,4 Super Angulon on my M2 and liked that better! As for the hood, it is a price that ONLy someone who has the lens would pay to complete a package and praying that sum total excedds that of the parts. I did have the 25/4 Nikkor Rf for a couple of years but it was scratched and did flare badly. I was toying with making a hood foor it (and at the same time make a hood for the 21/4), but decided that the market was too small and my 25f4 VC lens was better and gave the 25 away to a friend in Japan who managed to get new front elements and finder elements. Oh, he still doesn't have the hood!

I can only echo what was said a few postings above - I am really glad that I am a user (with many cameras) and not a collector!!

And compared with those astronomic prices discussed here for a lens hood I just bought a allmost mint Nikon F90X with a 80-200 AF zoom lens for about 125 USD the other day due to the big amounts of film cameras sold very cheap when people move to digital.... and I got a new SC-Skopar 21 mm to go with my S2 for 400 USD.... Fascinating to see what turns out to be superexpensive over time and not...

No - not THAT good, only f/4 but even so it is a good high quality Nikkor lens that will come to good use!
