27 or the new 35?

I'd suggest anyone interested in the new 35 head over to Tomem's Fuji archive and read every review of the lens. For the most part, these reviews are done by people who use cameras to take pictures, rather than to sell cameras via links.

I was very ready to swap my 35/1.4 for the f2 lens. Even had my eBay listing for the 35/1.4 saved as a draft. After the reviews, including looking at some OOC raws run through C1 at default, I decided to stick with what I already own.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the lens. Certainly WR and better build quality. Same size and weight unless a half an ounce makes a difference. On my XT1, same AF speed. Improved center and edge sharpness below f4, then the f1.4 starts to take the lead. But the reason I decided to hold onto what I have are the renders I was looking at. The new lens appears to get a bit heavy handed with contrast in lower light. I also saw some comparisons where highlights on OOC shots were handled much better with the f1.4.

For me, too early to decide to buy. Will wait until enough get in photographers' hands to get a better idea.

i cannot find that tomem's...

not sure what you mean by heavy handed...looking at some b&w images on flickr...i like the contrast but hard to say if it is ooc or done after the fact.

Sorry about the mispelling. When I use an iPad its black fonts against a black background and I can't see what it is I post.

You're quite right, its difficult to tell anything as one does not know what was done in post. There's a comment or 2 that refers to it blocking out shadow detail in low light. There's also a comment about it changing its draw depending on ambient light. There's a set of raw's converted to jpeg via C1 at default which sort of supports its changing character with highlights and shadows. I use C1, although DAM is in LR. I did not see any compelling reason to switch, or augment my 35/1.4. And I'd rather have better edge sharpness at f4 and above with the 1.4, as that's where I usually shoot. I don't care about edge sharpness when I'm shooting wide open. I also don't care for blocked shadows or a changing draw depending on lighting.

I'm not writing off the lens but want to see more experience posted before I buy. Bear in mind these early reviews tend to be done by Fuji sponsored photographers with pre-production copies. Spoke to the wife who also shoots Fuji and she's of the same mind as I am, we don't need 2 35's. Its either one or the other. For now, the 1.4. AF is quick enough for us on the new bodies.

Could someone please report on the new f2/35mm on the XE1 body?
Is focus noticeably faster/more accurate vs the original f1.4/35mm on this older model?

If someone is a position to test this it would be great.
Setting to manual focus and using Afl/Ael button to set focus... please.

mine is not a case of either or…the f2 is my only 35…i had the 1.4 when it was first offered but sold it eventually…more interested in trying different focal lengths at the time. my goal is having/using only 3 lenses but i may not make that…too many choices these days…
i think the biggest plus for the new 35 is size, silent use, quick af…and generally better build...

i don't have the 1.4 for a direct comparison but…so far just in playing around the f2 is quick on all 3 bodies that i have...

I agree.

The lens hardware, the camera CPU performance (which not only affects response tine but permits more sophisticated AF algorithms to run) both affect AF speed. Another advantage of the 35/2 lens is the lens is quieter (less clunky) during focusing.

I'm going to trade in my XF-60 macro & XF-35mm f1.4 lenses for the new XF-35 f2 R WR to go with my X-T10. I don't really need f1.4 and the faster and quieter f2 lens would suit my street photography better. In all the time I've owned the XF-60, I think I've used it on one occasion... Really.
