I have in today's camera bag a 35 Cron and a 50 Cron. There is no need to choose between the two focal lengths. I have basically chosen a moderate wide angle lens over a 21mm lens or similar, and I have chosen a "moderate tele lens" (so to speak) over a 75 or 90 lens here. The 35/50 combo really rules. It allows me to better focus on composition.
 
I do like 40mm. For my m-mount cameras, I only have a 35mm lens. The nice part of having a 35mm lens is that I can more easily justify buying a 50mm lens (which I will buy soon) since they're so different. If I had only a 40mm lens, I would reluctant to also buy a 35mm and a 50mm--but give me time. Eventually, I'll probably have all three.
 
With a 50mm lens, 35mm = "two steps back": true
With a 35mm - 50mm = "two steps forward": false (because faces, objects become distorted).

i am a long-time 50 fan, but i am becoming more and more a 35 fan. the x100 with its 35-equivalent is having its way with me ... 🙂
 
Owing both lens and M8 and a M6 It is a hard decision . I prefer 50mm on M6 and 35 mm on the M8. Both Summicron lenses being very contrast and sharp, these are my favourite lenses.

I have used primarily 50mm lenses since 1971. It appears that after all these years I "see", think and react with a 50mm lens as breathing. Yes, I have used many zooms in sports photography, motorsports and such, but I have never owned or used a 35mm prime lens.

Maybe that will change one day with an M9 and a 35 Lux for drop-dead beautiful snapshots, but until then, I am a huge fan of the Cron 50 and lusting for a little more with the Lux 80.:angel:
 
I shoot with both on RF, which surprises me as I've a strong preference for a 50 on SLRs - seldom going wider until recent times (I suspect that RF photography may have improved my SLR work in that regard). I've come to really like the 40mm-45mm focal lengths on SLR (and the equivalent field of view on my MF cameras).

But if I had to choose one focal length for my rangefinder, it would be 75mm so I could keep using my Summilux. Yeah, size. Yeah, weight. But I just love that lens. I owe it an outing soon...

the 2 focal lengths I keep in my bag is a 35 & 50. Most of the time I keep a 50 on the Bessa. If I had to choose I'd keep the 35/2.5. The 35 would force me to move in closer. Something I've been thinking about anyhow. I should force myself to use my 35 for at least 6 months for a one camera one lens project to really become one with the focal length.

That will never happen.

50mm equivalent is visual perfection.
