for me, I think it really depends on who i'm shooting that day.
In my dslr days, I loved my 35, never used my 50. the 35 was much easier for me to use. since I didn't have a 35 until a few days ago, I always wanted one.
when my nokton actually came though, I found out that 50 is much easier to use for me now.. especially with glasses on, 50 gives me much easier framing on my M2.
So even though my M3 is in much better condition than my M3, and I bought a 35 which I've been dreaming about, I find myself using my M2 w/ a 50 a lot more.
Interesting change. :)

but if I'm just shooting my friends a lot that day, I go with contacts + 35.

hehehe... I just LOVE that Quote ...made me gIGGLE
I use BOTH 35/50
so I must Have One Lazy Eye and one Trained...:D

And I must have 4 eyes because I like 28, 35, 40, and 50. It all depends on what I'm trying to shoot or what I'm willing to carry. I take lots of little kid pictures and I love to interact so a 28 or 35 usually stay glued to my SLR's. Sometimes, I even break out a 20 to be fully immersed in what is going on, distortion be damned. :) Nevertheless, the isolation (or normality) from a 40/2 or 50/1.2 is very useful and makes for very compelling compositions in certain situations.

I suppose they are like Lays, I can't have just one... but if I had to pick, I'd take a 35/1.4 any day of the week since I prefer immersion to intimacy.

Generally no cropping. Why?

Just a general question. I've been photographing almost exclusively with a single prime 50mm the past year and am not really thinking in 35mm mode. Coming from 16:9 filmmaking mode, it took me a while to get used to the 3:2 aspect ratio in still photography too.

For those who prefer the 35mm, do you guys do any cropping at all in your photos? Often? Sometimes? Never?

I don't prefer 35mm at all. In fact, I find it not so good for what I do. These days I am using 35mm in different tasks more than before...sort of stretching the envelope. :p Stretching, as in exercise, always brings a bit of pain.

But, cropping in general, is no big deal. Never have understood why some people think you are less than a photographer if you do crop.

Whatever it takes, I do it.

I normally shoot with a 28mm. Sometimes a 35mm. Very occasionally a 50mm or 21mm.

I find that 90% of what I shoot does better cropped to a 4x5 format rather than the full frame 2x3 format. Most of the times there is nothing on the far ends of the frame that adds anything to the image so I crop it off. In those instances where there is something meaningful on the far reaches of the frame, I keep it. But then I am happy with the 6x7 or 6x6 square when shooting medium format.

Oh so very funny seeing that I have only one eye and prefer the 50mm or a 24mm.
35mm is ok i guess but it's not really for me

Hey, I'm monocular too, and I just ordered a 35mm as the first lens for my new M6 (a 50 will be the next one though). But my trusty 50 hardly leaves the SLR. And the 24mm also comes out to play on occasion.

Really like the 35 cron, but if I could only have one, it would be the 50. Very much a people and portrait photographer and I like the way the 50 treats faces better than the 35.

Best,
-Tim

Limited to one rf lens, I would choose the 35. I also have three 50s, but like Bob, the 28mm is becoming used more and more. My current favorite rf lens is the CV Color Skopar 28/3.5 that lives on an R4m body.
