So the 8 element version really is the King of all Kings for bokeh.
If its focal length is 40mm, would a camera with 40mm lines be more suitable here?

Not as long you choose M3, M2 or M4 to shoot with. The maker of the lenses and the cameras knew the real focal length of their lenses.

So would the VF be off in these fine cameras if we used a CV 35mm lens on them because the VF shows 40mm lines or does the VF show 35mm lines but the images are cropped to the 40mm coverage?

I'm almost afraid to ask, but what does one pay for a decent Googled Summicron 35/2? I "need" one for my M3.
i sold my V1 summicron 35/2 goggled on here for 800. it was in pretty good condition, i really just hated using the goggles. it dimmed down the finder too much. i really liked the feel it's self of the lens. id get one with out goggles and just use the whole finder on my M3. sherry krauter told me the outside of the 50mm lines in the viewfinder is 38mm. i have used a voit. 35mm lens since selling the goggled lens.

Yes, but only a little bit. The precision of the framelines is with 35mm lenses not as critical as with 50mm lenses.

Hey,
I have a super nice copy of a V1 with goggles.
Personally I hate the Damn goggles.
I put it on my M6 and I feel like I'm looking thru $3 sunglasses from the Drug Store. But ... there's always a but ... the images on film are just perfect.
I also have a super sweet DR with Perfect goggles & hate them too, so it's probably just me.
