Hello,

I have just received a new 35mm Summicron lens from a dealer.

The hood does not remove easily and has to be leveraged off.

The reason, I believe, is that one of the black buttons is jammed and does not move the pair of related internal metal clasps.

Am I right in thinking that each pair of clasps should respond when its button is pressed?

I don't imagine that this flaw effects the lens? Am I correct?

Another question... Is it normal to have some play (travel) beyond the f2 and f16 extremities of the aperture wheel? I can advance the wheel slightly beyond the f2 and f16 detente positions.

Thank you.

Correct. I've never seen the inner workings, but it seems to me that each side of two clasps is actually part of a longer, semi-circular piece of spring steel. Does that side that doesn't release the clasps still have the spring tension when you push on the button? Also, when you keep the button pressed in, are you able to press the clasp in with your finger (or maybe the eraser tip of a pencil), or does it just slide in without any resistance?

Correct again. This shouldn't have any effect on the actual performance of the lens.

Mine is the same way. I assume it's normal and not anything to be concerned about.

Mark, Many thanks for your reponse. I'll see what the dealer says before I attempt to manually release the spring clip with my fingernail or pencil tip.

The hood should easily come off if you press both buttons at the same time. Make sure that you press them all the way otherwise the hood may catch and stay on the lens. Also it may take a firm press to begin with. Ditto for putting it back on too. It will loosen up over time btw.

If you can't get the hood to release or one side doesn't release properly then perhaps there's a problem with your hood. I've had them break in the past too.

As regards the detentes - yes there's a tiny bit of play at both ends of the aperture dial.

Enjoy the lens - it's a classic. (I confess, I have 2 - one chrome, one black 😀 )
