3D Printed Hood for Leica 21mm Super Angulon - HELP!

I need your help. My next 3D printed project is a lens shade / hood for the Leica 21mm f3.4 Super Angulon lens. Again, these are pricey and rare and I for one am paranoid about losing a hard to replace vintage lens hood. "Giganova" already provided me with some great caliper measurements of the lens, but I also need the basic dimensions of the lens hood.

Could anyone with this lens hood provide me with dimensions of the shade specifically? That would be a great help......I really need dimensions in MM and taken with a caliper to proceed in the fastest manner.

I've never really liked press-on accessories, but, the spring loaded tabs on the original hood would require a lot of small parts to pull off. I'm thinking instead of using the ring that tightens around the diameter of the lens with a small screw like on my Canon 50mm f1.2......all comments welcome.

Very nice of you to focus on these kinds of accessories. Sorry I don't have either a super angulon (not for Leica at least) or the hood to help you though.

But, I did get the double-shoe adapter and its awesome. Thanks for that.
 
Love the idea although I can't help you because I'm your would-be customer looking for 21/4 hood. IWKOO is way way too expensive. I'd love to get a cheaper alternative.

I can send you measurements tomorrow sometime. Did you have a list of measurements you wanted or should I just make all the ones I think are relevant and send them on with descriptions of what they are?
 
Nice. I agree that the attachment to the lens is the hardest part. The Leica "clips" would be really hard to manufacture in small quantities. I also wonder about how easy it would be to manufacture a screw on clamp like the older Canons that doesn't mark the lens?

Don't forget to leave room for filters too!

(I'd love to help with measurements but I posted mine off to California yesterday...)
 
Sorry for the confusion....I see in my original post I had a typo and I left of the "3" in the f3.4....my bad. It has been fixed! So, please send any info to me for the f3.4....then perhaps I can work on the f4.0 next! Cheers!

Yes, same as Elmarit V1. (Clarify, 3.4SA and V1 Elmarit share the 12501)

I would love to see a hood for the F4.0 SA.

Maybe a simple push on type you could glue to a old filter. No need to be square.
 
Steevo, you are doing great job making these 3D printed accessories, and of course you should be making whatever you feel the needs most, or a good challenge to tackle on.

That said, like others pointed out, 21/3.4 hood is, in comparison, cheaper and easier to replace. On the other hand, 21/4 hood is proprietary, harder to come by and notorious for crazy expensive asking price. Would love to have an alternative to IWKOO.

If/when you decide to do 21/4 hood, you know where to find a beta tester. (and I'll gladly pay whatever you sell the final work for) 😉
 
So the shade -- Leica model 12501 for the 21/3.4 Super Angulon or 28/2.8 Elmarit has a tapered (stairstepped on the inside actually) rectangular shade part -- like the mold for a truncated rectangular pyramid -- stuck gracelessly onto a cylindrical mount section that fits over the lens barrel and includes space for a series 7 filter.

Taking the pyramid section first, at its widest the interior base length of the rectangle is 61.72mm while the interior height of the rectangle is 43.82mm. At its narrowest it is 52.07 mm x 36.42 mm. The pyramid section alone has a depth of 9.14mm -- that's where the dividing line between pyramid and cylinder is. And it doesn't fit neatly on -- the pyramidal section will cut off the top and bottom of the cylinder by quite a bit.

Taking the shade off the lens and putting it on a rigid surface (my desk), then laying another rigid surface (I used a compact disc) across the top of the shade and measuring from the top of the CD down to the desk the shade was sitting on then subtracting the thickness of the CD gives a full depth of 24.26mm. The shade, as your picture shows, very nearly butts up against the aperture ring when mounted on the lens (they're separated by not quite the thickness of a business card).

Taking the depth from the top of the shade to the beauty ring of the lens next to the retaining ring using the same method I get a depth of 19.68mm.

It's a rectangular shade so there is an anti-rotation post on the lens itself - if you're going to have the shade fit over the barrel of the lens instead of screwing in to the filter thread (E48 threads) you'll need a notch for that. It's at the tick mark for checking the aperture setting.

For each of the measurements assume there is uncertainty as to the last digit.

Let me know if this is unclear or you need anything more or if what I have doesn't make sense or seems wrong when plotted out. I am definitely not above mistakes and would be happy to recheck any measurement that seems out.

Here are the latest renderings of the work I have done on the 21mm f3.4 Super Angulon Hood. (Thanks for all who contributed dimensions.)

I started by working out with a simple "slip on" version to test out the dimensions and overall look of the hood. This should be "sleeker" than the original hood because it does not have the larger ring around the base for the spring loaded buttons...etc.

I am doing a test print tonight.....we'll see how it goes!
